Course Description

This seminar covers current best evidence in the physical therapist’s management of the most common extremity syndromes seen in a general outpatient orthopaedic practice. Lecture material provides participants with the current body of literature surrounding the most effective management strategies using exercise and manual therapy. A special emphasis will be placed on treatment progression and exercise prescription. We will challenge several traditional philosophies regarding the assessment and treatment of orthopaedic conditions and present the most contemporary concepts. The laboratory component will comprise 40% of the seminar with the purpose of enhancing the participant’s joint manipulation and exercise prescription skills.

1. Describe the examination concepts for common extremity syndromes
2. Discuss the reasoning algorithm for manual therapy and exercise prescription
3. Examine the current best evidence applied to manual therapy and exercise of the extremities
4. Apply current concepts for examination and treatment to extremity orthopedic patient cases
5. Perform appropriate manual therapy and exercise techniques for common extremity syndromes

Day One:

8:00am - Examination principles: Communication Subjective examination Pain Science Symptom modification procedures Treatment algorithm

10:00am - Hip assessment and treatment: Lumbar spine considerations, Contemporary exam, and management strategies Hip osteoarthritis, Lateral hip pain, Tendinopathies, Femoral acetabular impingement

Lunch 12:00pm-1:00pm

1:00pm - Knee assessment and treatment: Hip and ankle considerations, Contemporary exam and management strategies, Osteoarthritis, Total joint replacement, Patella femoral pain, Ligamentous injury/reconstruction

4:00pm-5:30pm - Ankle assessment and treatment:, Talocrural and midfoot instability, Tendinopathies, Plantar fasciitis

Day Two:

8:00am - Shoulder assessment and treatment: Thoracic and cervical spine considerations, Subacromial impingement, Adhesive capsulitis, Shoulder Instability

Lunch 12:00pm-1:00pm

1:00pm – Shoulder management continued: Elbow assessment and treatment, Tendinopathies of the upper extremity, Ligamentous instability of the elbow, Elbow joint pathology

2:00pm 4:30pm – Closing ideas: Home exercise adherence techniques, Professional branding, Maximize outcomes through selling strategies, Techniques to enhance professional development

 

About the Speaker: Dr. Eric Chaconas

Eric Chaconas is a physical therapist actively engaged in clinical research and teaching in the area of extremity orthopaedics. He holds the role of assistant professor at the University of St. Augustine teaching courses in critical thinking, research and orthopaedic rehabilitation. Eric serves the Florida Chapter of APTA as a member of the board of directors and vice speaker of the assembly of representatives. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapists and earned a PhD from Nova Southeastern University. His research interests surround the topic of shoulder rehabilitation, manual therapy and exercise prescription.
