Join us for the 2021 APTA Minnesota Annual Conference Keynote:
Cultural Humility and Physical Therapy in Minnesota
Presented by Elora Koepcke PT, DPT; Henry Lozano PT, DPT; Ethan Capers PT, DPT; and Jeanne Lojovich PT, PhD
There is ample evidence of racial inequalities in all aspects of
society and within the profession of physical therapy. In Minnesota the disparities are glaring, where 94% of PTs/PTAs are White, 2% Asian, 2% Multiple races, 1% Hispanic, .5% African American, and .5% American Indian. 4% of the Minnesota population
identified as LGBTQ however the number of LGBTQ+ PTs/PTAs is unknown. The year 2020 will forever be defined as the time that compelled us to recognize this disparity and strive for changes to reduce or eliminate inequalities within our society,
in healthcare and in the PT profession here in Minnesota. The lack of racial minority and LGBTQ+ representation in the Minnesota physical therapy landscape is abundantly evident and it is time there was action, not just words, to make changes and show
the true representation of our community. To make meaningful progress in this area, providers, educators, and administrators must understand the landscape in which communication takes place. This requires integration of diverse viewpoints and cultural
paradigms in the crafting of policy, health literacy, pedagogy, and communication. This keynote lecture and discussion will give the APTA Minnesota community a springboard to understand, act, and implement change focused on improving the diversity, equity,
and inclusion of the underrepresented minorities in our clinics, schools, and places where physical therapy is delivered or learned. The panel will present their stories, perspectives, experiences, and make research-based suggestions to begin eliminating
this disparity in the Minnesota physical therapy profession. This course will include breakout sessions on benefits to my practice, promoting diversity and inclusivity in your PT practice, and health care inequality. APTA Minnesota Board President Holly
Clynch will open the course with a brief address.
