Exam and Evaluation of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Impairments in Various Settings Across the Lifespan

About This CourseThis course will be based on both cardiovascular and pulmonary physiology individually assessed in a multisystem framework. Upon completion of this course the therapist will have a solid understanding of the process and procedures of examination and evaluation of a multisystem approach to patient care, with emphasis on the cardiovascular and pulmonary system. Based on the patient evaluation an appropriate intervention will be designed with physiological monitoring to maximize outcomes. There will be an update on ventilatory strategies and newer airway clearance techniques as well as progression of activity and exercise. Appropriate Home Exercise Programs will be discussed as well as teaching the patient the concept of self management for chronic disease to continued to reach optimal levels of function.
Course ObjectivesUpon completion of the course the participant will be able to : • Provide an efficient examination and evaluation of a patient with cardiac or pulmonary issues • Provide assessment of heart and breath sounds and apply to treatment interventions • Evaluate an ECG and understand precautions and contraindications to interventions based on reading the ECG • Understand the importance of an interprofessional team in the care of patients with cardiovascular and pulmonary disease and impairments • Implement an appropriate treatment program for patients with multisystem dysfunction, focusing on the cardiovascular and pulmonary system • Instruct patients and families in newer airway clearance techniques • Instruct patients in ventilatory strategies and progression of exercise through appropriate monitoring and assessment

Speaker BiographyDr. Frownfelter received her certificate in Physical Therapy from Northwestern University and her certificate in Respiratory Care from the University of Chicago. Additionally, she has an MS in Organizational Development from Loyola University of Chicago and her DPT from RFUMS. Dr. Frownfelter is recognized internationally as a teacher, clinician, author, and consultant in the area of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Physical Therapy and is an APTA Board Certified Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Clinical Specialist. Her most recent book that she co-edited, entitled Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Physical Therapy; Evidence and Practice is the primary text used in many Physical and Respiratory Therapy Programs. She has received many teaching awards. She has served two terms as the President of the Cardiopulmonary Section of the APTA. She is a Board Member of the American Lung Association of Metropolitan Chicago and also serves on the Board of Directors for the National Emphysema/COPD Association in addition to serving on their Medical Advisory and Patient Education Committees. She was elected a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians, the only physical therapist to be granted that distinction.
