About This CourseThis two-day workshop will focus on the use of neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) to help the child with cerebral palsy achieve motor learning and motor control as well as muscle strength and range of motion. Current ideas will be discussed from the literature on CP, spasticity, gait and movement science to help understand the rationale for NMES treatment decisions. How to decide which muscles to stimulate and when and where they should be stimulated is the most challenging and the most important part of the workshop. The active task-specific approach will include using NMES for trunk, lower leg, some hip as well as hand, elbow, and forearm muscles. NMES equipment will be available for use on both days to gain hands-on experience.
Course ObjectivesAt the end of this course, participants will be able to: 1. Discuss the mechanics of portable NMES equipment 2. Know how and why to choose and set the parameters 3. Cite the indications, precautions, and contraindications of NMES 4. Plan treatment with NMES: when and which muscles to stimulate 5. Be familiar with the most current literature on NMES and understand how it relates to pediatric patients, especially those with cerebral palsy 6. Understand the different theories on NMES 7. Discuss the basics of task-specific movement science

Speaker BiographyJudy is currently in private practice in Alamo CA. She obtained her physical therapy education at Columbia University and New York University. She specializes in cerebral palsy and works with children with CP and other movement disorder problems. Her interests are in helping children achieve motor learning, motor control, muscle strength and ROM by using electrical stimulation together with movement science and motor learning ideas.
