About This CourseThis interactive lecture and hand-on laboratory course will update the busy clinician on the current evidence and best practice techniques for the examination, evaluation and treatment of hamstring strains, patellofemoral pain, and ankle sprains. Participants will learn new therapeutic interventions and the research evidence to back up their clinical reasoning. Clinical performance measures and return to sport progressions will be demonstrated and discussed.
Course ObjectivesAt the conclusion of this course the participant will be able to:
- Recognize the role of the physical therapist as a primary care provider for the treatment of three common musculoskeletal conditions
- Become more confident in recognizing, examining, evaluating and treating three of the most common disorders seen in a sports medicine practice
- Recognize current concepts surrounding the evaluation and treatment of acute and chronic hamstring injuries
- Improve decision making ability about how soon to return the athlete to sport following a hamstring strain
- Learn new techniques to evaluate, examine and treat patellofemoral pain
- Understand the current research behind the efficacy of prefabricated orthotics in patellofemoral pain
- Perform an algorithm based examination of the ankle ligaments
- Create innovative treatments for neuromuscular re-education of the lower extremity
- Be able to rank interventions for hamstring strains, patellofemoral pain and ankle sprains based on the current evidence and clinical practice guidelines.

Matheson PT, DPT, MS, SCS, OCS, CSCS is a 1996 graduate of the Mayo Clinic of Health Sciences. J.W. is a 2001 graduate of the first public APTA Credentialed Sports Physical Therapy residency at Gundersen-Lutheran Sports Medicine in Onalaska, WI. He is both a board certified specialist in sports physical therapy and a board certified specialist in orthopaedic physical therapy. J.W. completed his transitional DPT degree from the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions in 2005 and is currently working on a PhD in physical therapy at Nova Southeastern University.
Dr. Matheson has worked in a variety of clinical and academic settings as a clinician, researcher, adjunct faculty member, consultant, and owner. He is currently part owner and Clinic Director for Catalyst Sports Medicine. This is a private outpatient physical therapy practice and sports performance center located in Hudson, Wisconsin.
Dr. Matheson has contributed multiple chapters to textbooks in the areas of sports and orthopaedic physical therapy. He has authored and co-authored several peer-reviewed research articles on specific exercises for the knee and shoulder. Dr. Matheson is also an active member of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), serving on clinical practice guideline committees locally and nationally. In his free time, J.W. likes to escape to Montana with his family to hike, ski and fly fish.
