Course DescriptionThis course will provide PTs and PTAs with a clinically relevant definition of health promotion and a broad overview of how they can promote health and wellness in their practice setting. Speakers will present tools and models that can be used to promote overall health and wellness in various patient/client populations. Evidence-based resources, community tools, and referral resources will be provided.
Course Objectives:Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Define PT’s and PTA’s role in health promotion within the 6 domains of wellness across all practice settings
- Identify what health promotion services are appropriate for PT’s and PTA s to provide to patients/clients, and what services are appropriate to refer to health care team members
- Demonstrate awareness of evidence-based resources, assessments, and tools for health promotion
Speaker BiographiesDebbie graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Science degree in PT in 1995 and is a board certified specialist in geriatrics. She completed the tDPT program in 2012 and is enrolled in the Fellowship in Optimal Aging at Regis University in Denver. She has experience working with adult clients in skilled nursing facilities, TCUs and home care. She’s worked on special projects in fall prevention and health promotion. Debbie has worked an adjunct professor and guest speaker at St. Catherine University and as a clinical mentor for the Geriatric PT residency program at the University of Minnesota.
Swen received her Master of Physical Therapy from the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences in January 2000 where she graduated first in her class and was awarded the Paris/Patla Manual Therapy Award. Swen has worked with clients across the lifespan in their home setting, in schools, and in outpatient orthopedic clinics. Most recently Swen has been working as the Supervisor for Phenomenal Rehab. Swen’s life-long passion for health and improving quality of life through rehabilitation, education, exercise and wellness has driven her to continuously seek ways to incorporate health promotion and wellness into every day clinical practice. She is the author of "ABSolution! Progressive Core Training Made Simple," which is just one the ways she has gone beyond the clinic to encourage healthy living with her patients. Course Description An overview of commonly used adult fitness assessment tools will be presented and practiced by participants in a lab setting. This course will explore different strategies to execute a fitness evaluation within and beyond the physical therapy setting. The "new” role of the PT and PTA in designing and implementing fitness plans will be discussed. Examples of modifications that can be made to fitness assessments and plans for diverse populations (age, co-morbidities) will be presented.
Course ObjectivesUpon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Conduct a basic adult fitness assessment
- Envision their role in the assessment of adult fitness beyond patient impairment to overall client fitness
- Interpret the results of a fitness assessment
- Apply results of the basic fitness assessment development of the plan of care
Speaker BiographiesJaynie Bjornaraa PT, PhD, MPH, SCS, ATR, CSCS has been physical therapist since 1984, specializing in sports and orthopedic injuries (SCS). She is also certified as an athletic trainer (ATC) and has worked extensively with various sports teams, traveling nationally and internationally. She is certified as a strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS) by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and has served (or serves) on the NSCA Certification Commission, NSCA nominating committee, and on the Board of Directors for the NSCA. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a BS-Physical Therapy in 1984, from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill with an advanced MS-Physical Therapy/Athletic Training in 1991 and from San Diego State University with a Master of Public Health in 1998. She completed her PhD in Rehabilitation Science at the University of Minnesota in June 2008. She is currently an Associate Professor at St. Catherine University in Minneapolis/St. Paul MN in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program. Kris Gjerde, PT, MPH, CEEAA, currently represents the MN Dept. of Health, disseminating evidence based falls prevention programs to MN PTs and PTAs. She has actively worked in falls prevention since serving as project manager for the MNPTA Stand Up & Be Strong!. Kris has practiced PT in long term care, outpatient, and home health settings and served as an instructor for EnhanceFitness and SAIL community exercise programs.
MarySue Ingman PT, DSc is Associate Professor in the DPT Program at St Catherine University in Minneapolis, MN. She received her Doctor of Science degree in Health Promotion and Wellness from Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions in 2011. Her research interests include the relationship of physical activity and quality of life in patients who have had bariatric surgery as well as the role of physical therapists in health promotion in clinical practice. She has taught courses in on Health and Wellness at the University of Kentucky, New Mexico APTA Conference and the APTA Advanced Clinical Practice Health and Wellness course since 2006.

Course DescriptionThis interactive course will focus on how PTs and PTAs can assist patients/clients with changing behavior for improved health and wellbeing across a variety of practice settings. Evidence based strategies and tools will be presented, including motivational interviewing and wellness coaching strategies. Participants will practice applying these tools with different patient scenarios. Course ObjectivesUpon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Describe the components of some common behavioral change techniques including motivational interviewing, wellness coaching and The 5A’s
- Practice using behavioral change techniques with patient scenarios
- Discuss the fundamentals of how our profession can facilitate the natural processes of change through the art of listening
- List examples of conversational questions to use with clients as a means to help motivate them in changing behavior.
Speaker BiographiesDina I. Drubach, PT, DSc. is a physical therapist with 16 years ofclinical experience in treating persons with various neurological impairments. Dr. Drubach obtained her Doctor of Science in Physical Therapy from the University Of Maryland School Of Medicine. She recently completed Mayo Clinic’s graduate program as a Wellness Coach. She currently works at the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center as a Research Coordinator. She has worked on a variety of clinical drug trials in both areas of Neurology and Psychiatry. The last ten years of her career have been focused on Neurology and Psychiatry research. She has been a clinical education coordinator for physical therapy as well as research coordinator students in the clinical setting. Dina has also worked as Clinical Dementia Education Specialist at Mayo. She participates as an educator in various seminars held by Mayo Clinic on dementias and is very active in educating patients and care givers on fall prevention. Her special interest is looking beyond mortality and disease, and to focus on how people live with their conditions. She has 25 years experience with orthopedic and musculoskeletal problems and has spent the last 14 years working in a medically based health and wellness setting. Her specialty is core stabilization, general fitness and strengthening for the de conditioned and injured client, as well as cancer recovery exercise and sport specific training. She is a certified Reiki practitioner and instructor of the LeBed Healthy Steps Method, (an exercise program designed for women with breast cancer), and a Stott Reformer Pilates instructor. She is currently pursuing certification as a Health and Wellness Coach through Wellcoaches© .
