Course Description

Knowledge of lab values is a critical component to treating patients in all settings. Certain medical conditions affect the patient’s tolerance for activity and require monitoring to determine appropriate progression of activity to avoid jeopardizing patient safety. In this world of increasing autonomy, it is imperative to understand the medical condition of our patients.  In this course you will be given the tools to understand the physiological processes behind the lab values, from common tests to more specialized tests used in complex medical acute care settings.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course:

  • The participant will be able to recognize associations between medical diagnoses and lab values.
  • The participant will be able to verbalize an understanding of the effect of certain lab values on patient tolerance for therapy.
  • The participant will be able to recognize critical values resulting in necessary treatment modification and/or discussion with nursing or MD.
