About This CourseThis course will explore the hip joint relative to the young adult population and the emerging diagnosis of femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) and associated conditions, inclusive of articular cartilage pathology. This course will thoroughly explore normal and pathologic hip anatomy, biomechanics and kinematics. Critical physical therapy examination elements for the hip will be instructed. Non-operative intervention strategies will be reviewed. We will discuss the surgical approaches to managing this population and the post-operative care progressions and precautions following such procedures. Therapy progression strategies and assessment tools for safe return to activity/sport will be reviewed.
Course ObjectivesCourse attendants will demonstrate an improved knowledge of:
- Normal and pathologic hip joint anatomy, biomechanics and kinematics
- Physical therapy examination techniques for the hip
- Non-operative rehabilitation principles, strategies, and progressions for FAI
- Common surgical interventions for the young adult hip
- Post-operative hip precautions and physical therapy progressions

Speaker BiographyJill Monson is a physical therapist whose clinical practice focuses on the evaluation and treatment of sports medicine conditions, complex surgical and non-surgical knee and hip conditions, and movement pattern dysfunction contributing to overuse injury and performance decline. She is the lead physical therapist for the hip and knee surgeons at the University of Minnesota through her clinical affiliation with the University Orthopaedics Therapy Center-Fairview.
Jill earned her physical therapy degree at St. Catherine University in Minneapolis, MN. She completed her undergraduate degree at Duke University, where she also competed as a Division I athlete in the sport of volleyball. She is a Board Certified Orthopaedic Clinical Specialist (OCS) through the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). Jill also holds credentialing as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). Ms. Monson’s educational and professional background, athletic experience, clinical exposure and close partnerships with internationally renowned orthopaedic surgeons and sports medicine physicians have all enhanced her expertise in the domains of physical rehabilitation and athletic performance.
