Principles in Wound Care

Date: January 14, 2014 

Speaker: Pamela Cole, MSPT, CWS 

Course Description

Participants will learn the tenants of wound care both in how to treat the wound but also the underlying etiology; the role of PT interventions; and how to develop a physical therapy wound plan of care. 

Course Objectives

  • Participants will describe how to address wound infection and critical colonization, edema, necrosis, moisture balance, and the wound microenvironment.
  • Participants will be able to select interventions or make referrals for the treatment of the wound underlying etiology.
  • Participants will understand the modalities and interventions available to the physical therapist to help patient heal their wounds and when to use them.
  • Participants will be able to write a physical therapy plan of care for patients with wounds including identifying a practice pattern, wound impairments, short term goals, functional goals, and G code related goals, and plan.

Speaker Biography

Pam Cole, MSPT, CWS, attended Boston University for both undergraduate school and for her Master’s degree in Physical Therapy from 1991-1996. She has worked for Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park, MN for 14 years, 13 of which have been full-time in wound care.  With the initiative of Mark Melin, MD and vascular surgeon, Pam helped open the wound clinic at Methodist in March of 1998 and has been a senior clinician as the clinic has grown.  In 2002, she passed the licensure exam for Clinical Wound Specialist and her recertification in 2012. She completed her 10th year at the University of MN’s Physical Therapy program, instructing a 10 week wound care course.

Pam travels throughout the country giving continuing education courses, and in-services on aspects of wound care as a consultant. Pam has gone on 3 medical mission trips to Niger, Africa and Haiti.

Wound Care Skills Lab

Date: January 21, 2014
Speaker: Pamela Cole, MSPT, CWS 

Course Description

This didactic and hands on course will give the participant a chance to practice debridement, doing a dressing change in clean technique, compression wrapping, clinical vascular assessment, and modalities for wound healing, including negative pressure therapy, MIST ultrasound, laser infrared and UV, and pulsed lavage with suction.

Course Objectives

  • Participants will be able to perform the lab skills listed with safety and competency.

Orthotic and Prosthetic Management for Patients with Diabetes

Date: January 28, 2014
Speaker: Kevin L Hines CPO & Charles W. Kuffel CPO, FAAOP 

Course Description

This course will review all forms of orthotic management of patients with diabetes, from diabetic shoes and inserts to unweighting styles of bracing. We will review off the shelf options for immediate management of wounds with the pros and cons of each style. We will also discuss wounds associated with prosthetic use and tools available to help. 

Course Objectives

  • To assist clinicians in making good short term intervention choices
  • Help clinicians inform patients of short term orthotic solutions and long term orthotic solutions and expectation
  • Establish care team approach to wound care for the long term benefit of the patients.

Speaker Biography

Charles W. Kuffel CPO, FAAOP, graduated from  the University of Arizona with a degree in Exercise Physiology, emphasis in biomechanics and kinesiology.  He attended Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois where he completed his orthotic and prosthetic education.   During his orthotic residency in Chicago, he treated both pediatric and diabetic patients.  During his prosthetic residency in Phoenix, Arizona, he treated both upper and lower extremity prosthetic patients.  Charles most recently spent two years working with Gillette Children's Specialty Healthcare in St. Paul, Minnesota helping to establish the orthotic and prosthetic departments at the Lifetime Clinic. Charles is also an expert faculty member of the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists where he lectures on cranial remolding modalities.  Charles has spent a decade educating patients, healthcare professionals and fellow practitioners in the utilization of orthotics and prosthetics.  For the past several years, Charles has lectured on behalf of Tamarack Habilitation and Becker Orthopedic regarding management of the neuropathic foot using thermoplastic technology.  Charles is involved with the Northern Planes Chapter of AAOP and is the Immediate Past President and current Secretary of the organization.  On the Federal level, Charles is the current Secretary of NCOPE (National Commission on Orthotic Prosthetic Education).

 

For the past 26 years Kevin L. Hines, CPO, has specialized in lower extremity prosthetics and all  levels of adult and pediatric extremity bracing, trauma and rehabilitative care.  Prior to joining Arise, Kevin spent 13 years establishing the O&P  programs at Park Nicollet Systems and Tria Orthopedic Center.  Kevin is the  current President of MSOPP (Minnesota Society of Orthotists, Prosthetists, and  Pedorthists).
