About This CourseThis course is designed to familiarize participants with the anatomy/physiology and disorders of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Assessment and treatment protocols/techniques will be presented with discussion of case studies and multidisciplinary approach. It will include detailed review of muscles of the jaw (origin/insertion/action/innervation and referral patterns), and biomechanics (including role of disc and ligaments). Review of professional involvement of physicians, dentists and psychologist will be discussed with detailed instruction in assessment/treatment by physical therapists. Lab will include instruction/demonstration of physical therapy assessment of TMJ with practice of treatment techniques. Class participation will include review of case studies to apply to clinical setting. Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the anatomy/physiology of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and relate it to evaluation and treatment.
- Identify the disorders of the temporomandibular joint.
- Describe the role of dentist, psychologist and physical therapists in treatment.
- Evaluate the temporomandibular joint.
- Demonstrate treatment technique and protocols for various temporomandibular disorders.

Lori Steinley is a 1988 graduate of the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, MN with a bachelor of arts degree in physical therapy. She is a 1994 graduate of St. Cloud State University with a Master of Science in Exercise Physiology. Her thesis was “Masticatory Muscle Activity with Varying Head Postures” investigating the activity of the jaw muscles. She is a recent graduate, May 2014, of the University of North Dakota with a Master of Physician Assistant Studies. Lori has spent the majority of her clinical practice in out-patient orthopedics with emphasis on neck, back, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain and headaches. She began working with patients with temporomandibular disorders in 1992-including developing TMJ programs in clinics and working with dentists/psychologist in a TMD (temporomandicular disorder) clinic setting. She has over 250 continuing education hours of instruction in assessment/treatment of the head/neck region.
