About This Course

This 1.5 day course will use the Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG) for Low Back Pain produced by the Orthopedic Section of the American Physical Therapy Association as a framework for examination, evaluation, and treatment of patients with low back pain. Significant time will be devoted to instruction and practice of the manual treatment interventions described in the CPG. In addition to learning how to properly perform an assortment of manual techniques in a variety of positions, course participants will learn when and why to utilize certain techniques over others. This course will assist clinicians of all experience levels improve their clinical decision making. Additional topics will include the use of neurodynamics, pain-science education for the complex patient, the contribution of the hip to low back pain, and research based exercise.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
  • Incorporate evidence based examination components into his/her examinations of patients with LBP
  • Demonstrate appropriate and safe performance of both thrust and non-thrust mobilization/manipulation to the lumbar spine and pelvis
  • Understand the influence of hip dysfunction on low back pain
  • Be able to group patients with LBP into an appropriate impairment/function-based classification as outlined by the CPG
  • Be able to provide appropriate pain-science education and interventions to patients with LBP who exhibit central nervous system sensitivity to pain

Speaker Biography

Galen Wetzell graduated from St. Catherine University in 2010 with a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree. In 2012 he completed an Orthopedic Residency program at Riverside Physical Therapy in Grants Pass, OR and in 2013 he was Board Certified as an Orthopedic Clinical Specialist. He currently works at PTOSI in Plymouth, MN specializing in manual therapy for the spine and extremities.

Mark Jensen is a Certified Orthopedic Specialist currently practicing as the Lead Clinical Musculoskeletal Spine physical therapist at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. He graduated from Mayo School of Health Related Sciences in 1997. Currently, he is an instructor in manual therapy at the Mayo School of Health Sciences program in physical therapy

Aaron Hellem graduated from the Mayo Clinic Doctoral Physical Therapy program in 2013. In 2014 he completed the Mayo Clinic Orthopaedic Physical Therapy Residency and is a current employee at the Mayo Clinic Square Sports Medicine Center in Minneapolis, MN. He is a Certified strength and conditioning specialist through the National Strength and Condition Association. Aaron has experience instructing in the Mayo Clinic Physical Therapy program’s manual therapy course focusing on mobilization/manipulation of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine.

Registrants: Enrollment in this course is limited to 40 participants
Please wear lab appropriate clothing allowing for the exposure of one’s back and abdomen as well as shorts or athletic-type pants.
Pre-Course Materials: It is highly recommended, but not required, that participants view the online course, "Clinical Practice Guidelines: What Every PT and PTA Should Know", prior to attending this class.  It is expected that attendees will have a good working knowledge of how and why CPGs are being developed.  Participants who register for the online course will receive a 10% discount on tuition for the in-person course. Contact the office following completion of the online course to redeem the discount.
