Expand Your Wellness Practice with the Annual Physical Therapy Exam

Course Description

In June 2014, the APTA Board of Directors accepted new language regarding health and wellness and physical therapy practice. In addition, the APTA recognized the importance of developing a standardized Annual Physical Therapy Exam to promote ongoing health and wellness for patients, clients, and communities beyond the traditional functional limitation and impairment models of care. This session will bring you up to speed on the latest developments in health and wellness in physical therapy, explain the Annual Physical Therapy Exam, and take you through the components of the Annual Physical Therapy Exam so you can expand your wellness practice immediately.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
  • Understand the role of physical therapy under the new health and wellness language
  • Understand the purpose of the Annual Physical Therapy Exam in physical therapy
  • Describe the four components of the Annual Physical Therapy Exam, and appropriate tests and measures for each component
  • Identify ways to incorporate the Annual Physical Therapy Exam into their practice, including appropriate patient/client populations, marketing, and coordination with other members of the wellness team.

Speaker Biographies

Dr. Allison McNulty is a graduate of St. Catherine University’s Doctorate of Physical Therapy program where she graduated magna cum laude and received several honors, including Endowed Scholarship recipient and APTA Outstanding Student. She graduated magna cum laude from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor’s of Science in Kinesiology. She has been an active member of the Minnesota Physical Therapy association and the American Physical Therapy association by taking part in several committees that support physical therapist’s role in health and wellness and promoting physical therapy in the community. Allison’s passion lies in achieving health, wellness, and prevention for her clients through physical therapy, and she enjoys working with patients and clients across the lifespan and with a variety of conditions and impairments.

Dr. Eva Norman has been practicing physical therapy for more than 18 years.  She received her B.S. and M.S. degrees in Physical Therapy in 1996 and her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree in 2009, from Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, PA. Through the years, Dr. Norman has practiced in different practice settings with patients of all ages with various diagnoses. Early on in her career she developed a strong interest in geriatric rehabilitation. To expand her skill set over the years she has taken numerous continuing education courses and also worked in the areas of neurology, orthopedics and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation. In April 2013, she became a Certified Exercise Expert for the Aging Adult.

Dr. Norman, an active member of the American Physical Therapy Association since 1994, has served in numerous roles. She is currently serving as the MN Physical Therapy Association’s (MNPTA) Federal Affairs Liaison, MNPTA Delegate, and PT Political Action Committee Trustee. She is a member of the private practice, home health, geriatric, and neurology sections. 
In September of 2009, Eva founded Live Your Life Physical Therapy in response to her passionate desire to offer to her clients, patients, and the public, services both in home and the community that could help them to experience health, wellness, and a more active lifestyle throughout their life spans, through the creative applications of preventative and rehabilitative physical therapy, personal training, and nutritional services.

Exercise Prescription for Specific Populations

Course Description 

This course is appropriate for anyone prescribing exercise for health and fitness in their practice. You do not have to attend Session 1: Expand Your Wellness Practice with the Annual Physical Therapy Exam to benefit from this course. The course will explore exercise prescription for specific populations across several stages: starting therapy, ending therapy, and during wellness therapy. This course will use case examples from clients who have completed an Annual Physical Therapy Exam to understand the importance of a comprehensive health assessment, and illustrate how to analyze these results to develop a comprehensive fitness program. The use of thorough case examples will provide insight into the process of exercise prescription in physical therapy for the benefit of clients’ long-term health.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: 
  • Analyze the results of a comprehensive health assessment, such as the Annual Physical Therapy Exam, in regards to risk assessment, health, disease and co-morbidities
  • Provide appropriate exercise prescription for mock patients with consideration of age, disease profile, current health status, readiness for change, and confidence with exercise ability based on the results of a comprehensive health assessment
  • Discuss methods to retain and progress these clients following prescription, including when to recommend additional wellness providers 
  • Discuss ways to expand your practice to include wellness physical therapy

Speaker Biographies

Dr. Andrea Guggenbuehl is a graduate of St. Catherine University’s Doctor of Physical Therapy program. She graduated cum laude from the University of St. Thomas with a Bachelor’s degree in Health Promotion Science. She has experience treating senior citizens for chronic pain,vestibular rehabilitation, and fall prevention. She is certified in Functional Movement Screens(FMS), which is designed to reduce risk of athletic injuries. FMS can be applied at any fitness level to improve performance, track progress, and reach optimal movement. Andrea has a strong interest in promoting health and wellness in her patients. During one on one sessions,Andrea focuses on individual goals and creates a positive experience for clients. Her personal approach has helped her clients enjoy a more active lifestyle. Andrea enjoys helping patients both in the United States and abroad, and has participated in charitable trips to provide physical therapy services in the Dominican Republic and Guatemala. In her free time, Andrea enjoys tennis, golf, running, and cooking.

Dr. Jessica Berglund is a passionate and enthusiastic person and practitioner who truly believes that exercise is medicine. She spent her educational career at St. Catherine University, graduating with a Bachelor’s of Science in Exercise Science in 2011 and with her Doctorate of Physical Therapy in 2013. She has experience treating a wide variety of patients and strives to use health, wellness and prevention to help each patient achieve their life goals. She is an active member in the American Physical Therapy Association, MN Physical Therapy Association as well as the American College of Sports Medicine where she advocates for and promotes the profession of physical therapy.

Implementing Wellness Into Your Practice

Course Description

Thinking about expanding beyond traditional rehab? Considering offering wellness or fitness options to your current practice? This session will provide perspective from clinicians in Minnesota who are successfully incorporating wellness into their practice of physical therapy. Learn about successful practice models, the key players in these models, marketing strategies, and retention strategies from a panel of clinicians experienced in providing therapy in the realm of wellness in physical therapy.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: 
  • Learn about unique practice models that incorporate health and wellness
  • Learn techniques to incorporate health and wellness into your current practice
  • Understand the role of different providers in the realm of health and wellness

Speaker Biographies

Gail received her master’s degree in physical therapy from the College of St. Catherine in Minneapolis and her bachelor’s degree in athletic training from Gustavus Adolphus College. She has 17 years of hospital-based experience working with clients who have orthopedic and musculoskeletal problems. Gail also has eight years of experience working in the health club setting at Flagship Athletic Club as part of the Lifestyles Wellness Center team. She is responsible for evaluating, designing and working individually with clients who have injuries and orthopedic or neurological conditions. Her specialties are core stabilization, general fitness, strengthening for de-conditioned and injured clients as well as sport specific training.
