Series Overview

This series of evening courses will provide an overview of cancer rehabilitation in a three course series. The first evening will cover a brief overview of different cancer types, treatment modalities, and common adverse effects of treatment. The second evening will take a more in depth look at cardiac complications of chemotherapy and chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy, covering pathophysiology, assessment, and intervention for each issue. The third evening will address cancer-related fatigue and musculoskeletal impairments in the oncology population, covering pathophysiology, assessment, and intervention for each issue.

Speaker Biography

Dr. Gilchrist is a Professor of Physical Therapy at St. Catherine University and a Clinical Research Scientist in Oncology at Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota.  She has served on the Board of Directors for the Oncology section of the APTA for the past 4 years.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of this series, participants will be able to:
  • Describe different cancer types and select impairments found in each group.
  • Describe the medical treatment options for cancer and related adverse effects of each treatment.
  • For each of the following topics, the therapist will be able to describe the pathophysiology of the issue, appropriate assessment tools, and appropriate interventions:
             a. cardiotoxicity
             b. chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy
             c. cancer-related fatigue
             d. musculoskeletal adverse effects

Session 1

Date: February 17th, 2015

Schedule:

 

6:30 – 7:30 PM         Introduction to cancer types and epidemiology 

7:40 – 9:00 PM         Treatment Modalities and adverse effects of each:
                                          Chemotherapy
                                          Radiation
                                          Surgery
                                          Biologic therapies including stem cell transplants

Session 2

Date: March 3rd, 2015

Schedule:

6:30 – 7:30 PM         Cardiotoxicity as a result of cancer treatment: pathophysiology, assessment, intervention
7:40 – 9:00 PM         Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy: pathophysiology, assessment, intervention

6:30 – 7:40 PM         Cancer-related fatigue: pathophysiology, assessment, intervention
7:50 – 9:00 PM         Musculoskeletal adverse effects: pathophysiology, assessment, intervention
