About This Course

This two day course is designed to provide physical therapists, physical therapist assistants and occupational therapists with information and instruction on Kinesio Taping methods.  Kinesio Taping is a method of treatment for musculoskeletal and myofacial disorders and edema control.  This method can be used during physical activity and in conjunction with many therapies.  Attendees will gain insight into theory and taping techniques for a variety of concerns, including joint instability, muscular weakness, abnormal alignment, pain and inflammation.

Course Objectives

At the end of this course participants will be able to:

  • Describe the concepts of Kinesio Taping
  • Review muscular anatomy as it is related to Kinesio Taping
  • Explain and Apply the concepts of the Kinesio Taping Method
  • Describe the unique qualities of the Kinesio Tex Tape
  • Recognize the principles of Kinesio Tex Tape application
  • Utilize and demonstrate application skills in guided laboratory session
  • Demonstrate application skills during lab sessions
  • Practice the various cutting techniques and their clinical application
  • Apply Kinesio Taping method to relax and stimulate muscles
  • Apply Kinesio Taping methods for pain, swelling, joint mobility and stability
  • Apply various taping techniques for treatment of the spine, and upper/ lower extremity dysfunction
  • Apply various taping techniques for treatment of unique conditions using the concepts and principals of the Kinesio Taping Method

Speaker Biography

Deanna M. Wanzek , PT, PCS, CKTI, CLT  is a graduate from the Mayo Foundation School of Physical Therapy.  She has specialized in pediatrics for the past thirty years utilizing a holistic approach to evaluation and treatment.  She incorporates myofascial release, craniosacral, muscle energy and other complementary skills. She is certified in the use of  Universal Exercise Unit/TheraSuit Method.   She teaches in the Pediatrics course at St. Catherine University  in St. Paul, Minnesota.  She is recognized by the KinesioTaping Association as a Certified Instructor and was named Instructor of the Year for 2007.  She is also a Certified Lymphatic Therapist.  She is an  APTA board certified Pediatric Clinical Specialist. DeDe is employed by St Croix Therapy in Hudson, Wisconsin, a non-profit organization serving children.

8:10am- Intro KT concepts, theory, history, physiology/pathology:  Intro five major physiological effects (skin, circulatory, fascia, muscle function) Basic application concepts: finger demo and sacrospinalis demo

10:45- Jt. Function: biotensegrity, application basics, prep, precautions
12:30- Lunch (on your own)
1:30- KT Assessments & Labs, Cervical Paraspinals, scalenes anterior, quad femoris, pec major, rhomboid, gluteus medius
3:15- Break
3:30-  KT Assessments/Labs cont., gastroc and soleus, deltoid, wrist extensors, extensor policis longus, Assessment Q&A :  Conclusion
5:30- Conclude

8:00- Overnight responses, trouble shooting, Basic concepts of corrective techniques, tension, mechanical correction, patellar tracking, shoulder instability
10:00- Break
10:15- Fascia correction, lateral epicondylitis, ITB application
11:30- Lunch (on your own)
12:30- Space, tendon &ligament correction, elbow, lumbar, carpal tunnel, Achilles, knee
3:00- Break
3:15- Functional correction, scar management Q&A Conclusion

Registrants: Registration is limited to 30 registrants. 
Women, please wear halter tops or tank tops. Men/women, please bring shorts to change into if you wear long pants.
