About This Course

Through lecture and discussion, this course will address the specifics of today’s model of training athletes and the relationship of injury causation and return to action. The culture of training facilities, facilitators of the training and the reality of scientifically-based training will help the practitioner broaden their base knowledge of injury causation and future preventative measures. The course will address the range of the athlete from the elite through the weekend warrior, from the young through the aging athlete.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
  • Gain an understanding of the culture of sport and will better appreciate the patient within this culture.
  • Understand the physiology related to training athletes based on the current models in the research literature.
  • Understand the modeling of conditioning athletes and the relationship to the most common injuries of today.
  • Gain an understanding of the effect of growth and maturation related to the presentation of today’s injuries in youth.
  • Gain an understanding of the issues related to deficits caused by aging and the relationship of injuries for the weekend warrior.

Speaker Biography

Stacy Ingraham, Ph.D. has recently take a faculty position at Crown College in Minnesota as professor in department of Science. She is heading up a new exercise physiology program and will be starting a new M.S. program in Athletic Training.

Most recently, Stacy Ingraham has been a teaching faculty member and a member of the graduate faculty in the School of Kinesiology at the University of Minnesota since 2001-2015. She obtained her Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in kinesiology with an emphasis in exercise physiology and public health epidemiology in 2002. Dr. Ingraham completed her B.A. and M.A. at the University of Northern Iowa. She was a high school and collegiate cross-country and track coach from 1982-1999. She currently provides coaching services to athletes from all over the country through her own program, The Training Edge. Stacy was also a former cross country and track athlete at the University of Northern Iowa.

Dr. Ingraham is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). She has been a frequent presenter at the ACSM national convention and publisher within multiple high impact journals. Dr. Ingraham presents at many high schools, colleges, universities, sports clubs and conventions related to sports performance. Dr. Ingraham has presented at the Minnesota State Health Education Conference and the Minnesota State League; Women in Sports Leadership Conference, as well as the Twin Cities Sports Medicine Conference in affiliation with the Twin Cities Marathon and the University of Minnesota Medical School. She has also presented at the Minnesota Football Coaches annual convention. She has published an article in the Minnesota Medicine Journal, May, 2003 related to injury in sport and flexibility. Dr. Ingraham is often cited in numerous publications on sports performance topics. Dr. Ingraham has also been the recipient of the Who's Who in America's College Teachers award in both 1996 and 2000.
