About This Course
This 7.5 hour course will be taught in two consecutive half-day sessions. The course will provide PTs, PTAs, and SPTs with an introduction to the basic principles of hatha yoga, and will address the current evidence for the use of yoga as Physical Therapy. Through lecture, discussion, and direct experience, the participants will learn how yoga can be used as a tool to address the issues of patients in an orthopedic PT practice, including improvement of range of motion, strength and stability, balance, kinesthetic sense, posture, and quality of life. The use of supported restful poses for stress reduction and healing will also be addressed. Participants will be introduced to methods for adapting and modifying poses to meet their personal needs as well as those of their patients. No previous experience with yoga is required for this course.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Experience the basic principles of hatha yoga postures.
- Learn specific poses to evaluate and treat patients with orthopedic problems, using chronic back pain, knee pain and UE issues as examples.
- Learn modifications of poses to make yoga accessible to patients.
- Learn active poses as well as passive restful poses.
- Become aware of the current evidence-based literature regarding the use of yoga in the treatment of orthopedic conditions.

Speaker Biography
Marla Bookhout received her B.S. in PT in 1972, and her M.S. in Orthopaedic PT in 1982. She works as an Orthopedic Manual Therapist at PTOSI in Plymouth and teaches yoga classes at MindBody Solutions Yoga in Minnetonka. She has studied the Iyengar method of hatha yoga with William Prottengeier in Minneapolis since 1986 and uses yoga extensively with her patients in the clinic. Marla taught Continuing Ed courses for the APTA Section on Women’s Health for many years and is a guest speaker for the University of Minnesota PT program.

Registrants: Enrollment in this course is limited to 20 participants
Please dress for ease of movement. Yoga props will be provided by the studio, although participants may bring their own mats if desired.

Cancellations: Except for medical emergencies, cancellations two weeks before the course will be completely refunded, cancellations one to two weeks before the course will be refunded at the rate of 50%, and cancellations less than a week before the course will not be refunded.
