The Role of the Vestibular System in Falls Prevention

Course Description
It is an exciting challenge to help older adults maintain balance function, prevent falls and unnecessary dependence. This course is designed to improve clinicians’ knowledge of the dynamic role the vestibular system plays in maintaining balance and falls prevention.
Speaker Biography
Mary has been practicing physical therapy for 21 years in a variety of therapeutic settings with a proclivity toward geriatrics. Her love of the elderly and increasing exposure to balance deficits motivated her to become certified in Vestibular Rehab by Susan Herdman and establish an outpatient balance program serving folks in NE Wisconsin. For the last eight years, Mary has focused on the provision of systematic balance evaluations and progressive interventions to people in their homes. She is employed by Gentiva Home Health in the Twin Cities as the Safe Strides Rehab Director and continues to be curious about falls prevention.
Superior Semicircular Canal Dehiscence: A Minor Problem

This talk will focus on what is presently known regarding the prevalence, development, and presentation of the newest recognized cause of vertigo. It will cover the basic history, the early treatment strategies, and the more recent attempts to understand why superior semicircular dehiscences seem to be increasing. The talk will also review diagnostic studies and present day treatments and outcomes.

Vestibular Rehabilitation in Concussions

Course Description
Between 1.7 and 3 million sports- and recreation-related concussions happen each year. The CDC reports the number of concussions has doubled in the past 10 years. Symptoms are variable in concussion, but include dizziness, fogginess, visual difficulty, and headache. Specifically dizziness is has been reported to occur in 23% to 81% of cases in the first days after injury. Many post concussive symptoms are due to visual and vestibular deficits and vestibular rehabilitation has been shown to be an effective treatment. This course will review the use of specific evaluation tools, including the VOMS, in identifying visual and vestibular deficits in concussion. Treatment ideas and progressions will be discussed through case studies.
Speaker Biography
Sara received her Bachelor of Arts in Kinesiology and Master's Degree in Physical Therapy at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She gained interest in Vestibular Rehabilitation while doing clinical rotations in her hometown of Kenosha, WI, where she learned the effectiveness of vestibular rehabilitation, as well as the rewards of therapy.
Sara has been the director of the Physical Therapy Department at National Dizzy and Balance Center since 2008. She specializes in the treatment of concussions, vestibular migraine, and Mal de Debarquement. In addition to clinic practice, Sara is a member of the Vestibular Special Interest Group through the American Physical Therapy Association. She is the chair of the Abstract of the Week Committee. Most recently she was involved in the development of a new APTA course – Introduction to Vestibular Rehabilitation.
Cervicogenic Dizziness

Course Description
Cervicogenic dizziness is the next lecture in the Advanced Vestibular Rehabilitation Series. This lecture is designed to provide knowledge of how to evaluate and treat an individual with signs and symptoms consistent with dizziness related to cervical injuries. Although an novel therapist could attend, there is an assumption of some basic understanding of vestibular rehabilitation. Current trends in the etiology, evaluation and treatment of cervicogenic dizziness will be shared.
Speaker Biography
Michelle Peterson, PT, DPT, NCS has been working in the field of neuro rehabilitation for over 20 years. She has specialized in the rehabilitation of traumatic brain injury and vestibular dysfunction and has lectured on a regional and national basis in both areas.
