About This Course

Inattention to subtleties in the history and physical examination can lead to a misdiagnosis of certain injuries, and therefore ineffective treatments as well as frustration on the part of both the patient and the clinician. This workshop will provide the clinician with the tools needed to accurately identify the characteristics of commonly confused diagnoses in the foot and ankle.

Attendees will review the anatomy and biomechanics of the foot and ankle. Diagnostic characteristics of plantar fasciitis, FHL tendinitis and sesamoiditis, Achilles tendinitis and posterior impingement, bunion and hammer toe, and ankle instability will be reviewed. Treatment techniques comprising of soft tissue and joint mobilizations, proprioceptive re-education, strengthening and stretching exercises, and injury prevention will be presented. Attendees will have ample opportunity to practice the techniques.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will have knowledge of:

  • Mechanics of the normal foot and ankle.
  • Pathomechanics of commonly confused conditions including:
plantar fasciitis vs. FHL tendinitis vs. sesamoiditis,
    Achilles tendinitis vs. posterior impingement,
    bunion and hammer toe,
    ankle instability.
  • Detailed evaluation that forms the basis for effective treatment.
  • Treatment methods to effectively address the pathomechanics that will comprise:
    soft tissue manipulation,
    joint manipulation/mobilization,
    proprioception and neuromuscular rehabilitation,
    strengthening and plyometric activities,
    injury prevention.

Attendees will be paired for the practical session and should be prepared to evaluate and treat, as well as be evaluated and treated.
