About This Course
Falls in older adults are a growing public health concern across the United States. There is consistent evidence that appropriate physical therapy intervention is effective in reducing falls in older adults. This course will focus on evidence-based assessments and interventions for this patient population. Lab session and case studies will also be included. Course instructors are from the Geriatric Residency Program at the University of Minnesota.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Describe the extent & impact of falls in older adults with regard to quality of life and cost to society.
- Describe the major components of the Clinical Guidance Statement on management of falls in community-dwelling older adults.
- Identify how to implement the Clinical Guidance Statement into your physical therapy practice.
- Describe appropriate evidence-based assessments for balance and fall prevention in your clinical practice.
- Describe appropriate evidence-based interventions for balance and fall prevention in your clinical practice.
- Synthesize course information and apply to case studies.

Speaker Biographies
Becky Olson-Kellogg, PT, DPT, GCS, CEEAA graduated from the University of Minnesota’s Program in Physical Therapy in 1992, and completed her tDPT Degree at Boston University in 2005. She received the first ever Geriatric Clinical Educator of the Year Award from the Geriatric Section of the American Physical Therapy Association in 2002, and the Corrine Ellingham Outstanding Service Award from the Minnesota Chapter of the APTA in 2008. She earned her Geriatric Clinical Specialist certification in 2003, and recertification in 2013, and her Exercise Expert in Aging Adults certification in 2013 as well. Her clinical specialties are in the areas of geriatric rehabilitation and vestibular rehabilitation, and she teaches continuing education courses in both areas nationwide. Currently she is Associate Program Director, Assistant Professor, and Geriatric Clinical Residency Director at the University of Minnesota’s Program in Physical Therapy, and a Graduate Faculty member in the Program in Gerontology, in the School of Public Health.
David Gillette, PT, DPT, GCS received his DPT from the University of Washington in 2009, and completed his residency in geriatric physical therapy at the University of Minnesota in 2012. His experience in geriatrics ranges across outpatient, sub-acute, and long-term care, and he has conducted research on adherence to exercise in the older adult. In his role as a physical therapist he has assisted in improvements in the balance and falls program at St. Therese. He has taught various classes on adherence to exercise, is faculty for the residency program for fall prevention, and is clinical faculty for St. Catherine University's ICE program and preceptor for the Diabetic Foot Clinic for the DPT program at University of Minnesota.
Miranda M. Beck, PT, DPT, GCS earned her undergraduate degree in Biology, Society and Environment from the University of Minnesota. She received her DPT from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and completed the geriatric residency in physical therapy at the University of Minnesota in 2014. She works as a physical therapist at St. Therese Rehab primarily in the outpatient health and wellness and home health settings. She is faculty for the geriatric residency teaching aquatic therapy for older adults and she also started an ongoing research study at St. Therese assessing frailty in older adults. She has a special interest in tai chi and health and wellness promotion in older adults.
