About This Course

This five-day course is being taught by NDTA™ Pediatric and Adult course instructors and is specifically designed for therapists working with individuals with cerebral palsy, stroke and traumatic brain injury. As a prerequisite to attend this course, participants must have completed an NDT/Bobath Certificate Course in the Management and Treatment of:

  • Individuals with Cerebral Palsy and Other Neuromotor Disorders or 
  • Adults with Stroke or Brain Injury

Course content will include: components of normal gait, lower extremity biomechanics, gait deviations in patients with neurological conditions, problem solving, treatment principles and strategies.  Both lab and lecture sessions will be conducted.  Therapists will have an opportunity to discuss and analyze common deviations of gait and learn potential treatment strategies to diminish the impact of gait deviations on the patient’s ability to function while ambulating. Participants will treat patients four of the five days of this course. 

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will have knowledge of:

  • Identify components of normal gait
  • Identify components of lower extremity biomechanics
  • Relate biomechanical components to problems associated with neurological dysfunction
  • Analyze gait deviations and identify impairments contributing to these deviations
  • Synthesize information to develop appropriate treatment strategies for persons with neurological dysfunction
  • Demonstrate the ability to implement appropriate treatment strategies during treatment practicum

Speaker Biographies

Karen Brunton B.Sc. PT, C/NDT is a Physical Therapist and Clinical Educator at the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, University Health Network. She holds a Lecturer status appointment with the Department of Physical Therapy, University of Toronto.  Karen has over 35 years experience working with clients with neurological impairments in acute, rehabilitation, long term care and outpatient settings.  She has been an NDTA™ Adult Course Coordinator Instructor since 1991, Advanced Course Instructor since 1996 and an instructor with IBITA (International Bobath Instructor Training Association) since 1997.  Karen has taught courses internationally and extensively throughout North America (Canada, United States and Mexico).  In addition, she has presented on various topics at NDTA™ National Conference, Ontario Physiotherapy Conference and Canadian Physiotherapy Congress. 


Karen has served on various committees within the NDTA™’ Instructors’ Group and as a member of the Board of Directors of NDTA™ from 2009 – 2011.

Margo Prim Haynes, PT, DPT, PCS, C/NDT, is a NDTA Coordinator Instructor for the NDT/Bobath Pediatric Certificate Course and Advanced Pediatric Courses. She has presented numerous continuing education courses in the United States with emphasis on children with neurological disorders. Margo graduated with a certificate in physical therapy from the University of Pennsylvania. She received her doctorate degree in physical therapy from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill in 2008.  She has worked over 35 years as a physical therapist in a variety of clinical settings including home-based early intervention, hospital, school and clinical programs. Margo is currently self-employed working with physically challenged infants, young children, adolescents and their families in North Carolina.  She serves as adjunct faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Margo is a Pediatric Clinical Specialist, certified by ABPTS in 2008. Margo is published in the area of NDT and modified CIMT and is currently conducting research specific to functional outcomes and NDT baby treatment. mhaynes@etinternet.net.  

Registration Information

Who should attend this course: PTs and OTs who have successfully completed an NDT/Bobath Certificate Course and are currently working with the described patient population. All participants must have completed the prerequisite course. 
Registrants: Enrollment in this course is limited to 24 participants
Clothing should allow for freedom of movement during labs. Professional dress for patient treatment sessions.
