Several lines of research have demonstrated that specific elements of exercise prescription such as dosage, exercise skill level, and exercise intensity (including the intensity of cardiovascular exercise prescribed in combination with skill training) can affect these neurologic mechanisms. This presentation will review current theories of motor learning and principles of use-dependent neuroplasticity, and demonstrate the application of these principles to the modification of common therapeutic exercise prescriptions. Course Objectives Identify clinically important elements of current theories of motor control and learning. Discuss elements of neuro-plastic adaptation common in many clinical presentations. Demonstrate clinical application of factors known to influence use-dependent neuroplasticity. Speaker Biography Patrick Grabowski, MPT, PhD, OCS, is an Assistant Professor in the physical therapy program at the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse. He earned his Master of Physical Therapy degree from Marquette University and his PhD in motor control from the University of Wisconsin - Madison. His clinical background is in orthopedics and sports physical therapy. He is currently involved in research on the effect of cardiovascular exercise on motor learning, as well as the assessment of musculotendinous function in patients with chronic tendon pathology.

Research evidence supporting the use of pain neuroscience education as a primary intervention for chronic low back pain and other persistent pain is mounting. Unfortunately, when to utilize pain neuroscience education is not always obvious in the outpatient orthopedic clinic. Patients that have persistent pain require a different treatment framework than patients with acute pain. This educational session will provide a basic understanding of the neuroanatomy of pain mechanics, assessment tools for determining who might benefit from pain neuroscience education and in-session practice providing pain neuroscience education. Course Objectives Verbalize ascending nociceptive pathways by the end of the educational session. Learn to identify patients who can benefit from pain neuroscience education. Complete mock pain neuroscience education to a partner in session. Speaker Biographies Ryan Buus graduated from the Mayo School of Health Sciences Doctor of Physical Therapy program in 2014 and completed the Mayo Clinic Physical Therapy Orthopedic Residency in 2015. He is the Musculoskeletal Lead Therapist at Mayo Clinic’s outpatient orthopedic practice. He is a faculty member in the Mayo Clinic Physical Therapy Orthopaedic Residency and Occupational Therapy Hand Residency teaching the biopsychosocial and persistent pain management curriculum. DJ Ciancio graduated from Northwestern University Doctor of Physical Therapy program in 2017. He is currently completing the Mayo Clinic Physical Therapy Orthopaedic Residency. DJ’s clinical interests include treating patients with persistent pain, low back pain, and improving patient adherence with their home exercise program. Pete Johnson graduated from the Mayo School of Health Sciences Doctor of Physical Therapy program in 2017. He is currently completing the Mayo Clinic Physical Therapy Orthopaedic Residency. Pete’s clinical interests include manual techniques with an exercise basis and clinical education.

This course will explore relevant anatomy and pathoanatomy of the patellofemoral compartment. Examination of the lower extremity and faulty movement patterns will be covered as part of the pre-operative/non-operative evaluation. Rehabilitation of the following patellar stabilizing procedures will be addressed: medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction and tibial tubercle transfer. Complications following these procedures will be covered as well, including management of arthrofibrosis. Return to play will be addressed with specific attention to detail for the patient with patellar instability, both non-operatively and post-operatively. Case studies will be presented. There will be a lab portion for this course. Course Objectives Describe faulty movement patterns that are common to individuals with patellofemoral instability. Discuss potential complications following select patellar stabilizing procedures. Describe return to play criteria following patellar stabilizing procedures. Speaker Biographies Jill Monson, PT, OCS: Jill is a physical therapist at TRIA Orthopaedic Center in Woodbury, MN. She received her undergraduate degree from Duke University and went on to receive her physical therapy degree from St. Catherine University. Jill is a board certified specialist in orthopedics. Her clinical focus is on the management of non-operative lower extremity pathology, with special interest in patellofemoral compartment pathology, articular cartilage lesions, ligamentous knee pathology, and young adult hip pathology. Liz Niemuth, DPT, OCS: Liz is a physical therapist at Institute for Athletic Medicine at the University of Minnesota Health Clinics and Surgery Center in Minneapolis, MN. She received her undergraduate degree from University of St. Thomas and went on to receive her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from St. Catherine University. Liz is a board certified specialist in orthopedics. Her special interests include knee pathology and running injuries. Shannon Kelly, DPT, OCS: Shannon is a physical therapist at Institute for Athletic Medicine at the University of Minnesota Health Clinics and Surgery Center in Minneapolis, MN. She received her undergraduate degree from Northwestern College and went on to receive her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from St. Catherine University. Hospital delirium is expensive. Delirium has long-term consequences. Hospital delirium is especially common among older adults who have had surgeries such as hip replacement, heart surgery, or those who are in intensive care. Risk factors include older age, visual or hearing impairments, having multiple medical co-morbidities, or brain disorders such as dementia, stroke, or Parkinson’s disease. Additional causes include acute infection, malnutrition/dehydration, pain, certain medications, severe or terminal illness, metabolic imbalances, or sleep deprivation. Hospital delirium in elderly patients have poorer outcomes, including death, increased morbidity, long-term cognitive deficits, decreased functional mobility, and institutionalization. The aging US demographics say that the number of adults age 65 and older will double between 2010 to 2030 and the most rapidly growing population are the oldest old, those age 85 years and older. Early mobility has been the only intervention resulting in a decrease in days of delirium. Studies have shown that early mobility has been shown to be safe and feasible in critically ill patients. Early mobility decreases days of delirium, days in the ICU, and hospital length of stay. Functional outcomes are also improved with early mobility. Early mobility can be performed by any part of the interdisciplinary team; however, physical therapists are the mobility experts and integral to implementing the most comprehensive early mobility programs in the hospital setting. Course Objectives Recognize hospital delirium Understand bed rest and immobility Learn geriatric sleep patterns Discuss geriatric pharmacology Identify best evidence for management of hospitalized older adults at risk for delirium Implement the NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) recommendations Discuss best evidence for early mobility of hospitalized older adults at risk for delirium Learn the unique role of physical therapy (AND EARLY MOBILITY) Understand the role of nursing (and PT collaboration with them) Speaker Biographies Jacque Pokorney earned her Master of Science in Physical Therapy in 1991 and has been recognized as a Geriatric-Certified Specialist by the APTA since 1999. Jacque has worked in all clinical settings, with an emphasis on working with geriatric patients. She has practiced in the acute care setting for the past fifteen years, including at Level I Trauma Centers since 2005: UW Hospital in Madison, WI and at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, MN since 2013. Jacque was a member of UW Hospital’s Acute Care for Elders (ACE) team from 2007-2013. She has presented this topic at the American Geriatric Society Annual Meeting in 2011 and Wisconsin PT Association Conference in 2013. She has co-presented with Amanda Lalonde at the APTA Combined Sections Meeting 2013, the MNAPTA Evening Education Series in 2014, and several Continuing Education modules in the Twin Cities on this topic. She is leading a collaborative effort to bring an interdisciplinary approach to Delirium Management to Hennepin County Medical Center. Amanda Lalonde has practiced in acute care hospital and in the outpatient neurological setting. She has been a member of an Acute Care for Elders (ACE) team, and completed numerous lectures on the topics of delirium, dementia, and the care of hospitalized older adults, including at CSM in 2013. Amanda developed a delirium management program in the Fairview system and consults on cases with clinicians as indicated. She is currently the Director of Clinical Education and an Assistant Professor in the Division of Physical Therapy at the University of Minnesota. She is Board Certified in Geriatrics through ABPTS, and a member of the Minnesota Hospital Association Delirium Workgroup.

Speakers: Owen Runion, PT, DPT, and Paul Yerhot, PT, DPT Contact Hours: 2.5 Course Description As movement specialists, physical therapists excel at identifying and correcting movement pattern faults which may be contributing to a patients’ dysfunction. In contrast, the question of quantity serves as an ever-present challenge. What is the proper dosage for their home program? When is it appropriate to progress the patient? How do we know if they have done enough to be prepared? Have they done too much? This course will focus on exploring practical application of evidence-based exercise dosage systems which will assist in answering these questions. Our goal is to arm those in attendance with the ability to apply these concepts to the first patient Monday morning that asks “how long until I can get back to [salient activity].” The course will be organized into two sections. Actual and hypothetical case scenarios will be discussed throughout to illustrate practical application. First, exploration of physical stress models will provide a foundation of understanding for tissue loading responses to exercise and activities. The physical stress model will be viewed through the lens of overuse injuries and exercise progression. Two realms of therapy in which understanding dosage is crucial. Second, multiple evidence-based exercise progression systems supported in the research will be investigated. These include the 10% rule, and weak third week for bone re-modeling, with the majority of the time being spent exploring the acute:chronic workload ratio. Course Objectives Explore physical stress models and thresholds for tissue adaptation in their role with overuse injuries and exercise progression. Investigate evidence based systems for determining appropriate stress workloads in the rehabilitation setting. Examine the current research supporting the use of the acute:chronic workload ratio. Apply the acute:chronic workload ratio to actual patient scenarios and discuss how this system can be applied to multiple pathologies. Speaker Biographies Owen Runion graduated from with his Doctorate in Physical Therapy from St. Catherine University in 2016. He worked at Courage Kenny Sports & Physical Therapy before starting his sports residency with The Mayo Clinic in August of 2017. Outside of PT he has worked with local Minneapolis basketball team’s developing dynamic warm ups and leading pre-season strength and conditioning sessions to reduce the risk of injuries. Staying on top of the most recent literature is the cornerstone of Owen’s practice. He is passionate about becoming the best sports PT he can for all of his patients. Paul Yerhot received his Doctorate of Physical Therapy in 2015 from the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse. He was a member of the inaugural year of The Mayo Clinic’s Sports Medicine Physical Therapy Residency; graduating in the summer of 2017. He has presented regionally at the MNPTA Annual Conference in 2017, Mayo Clinic’s ACL Workshop, and Mayo Clinic’s Sports Symposium. Practical application of current research serves as the foundation of his clinical practice and presentation style.
Treatment of Hallux Valgus Deformity: A Muscle Strengthening Approach	4/21/2018	4/21/2018	9:00 AM	11:30 AM	4/21/2018 9:00 AM - 11:30 AM Presenter: Ward Glasoe, PhD, PT, ATC Treatment of Hallux Valgus Deformity: A Muscle Strengthening Approach Speakers: Ward Glasoe, PhD, PT, ATC Contact Hours: 2.5 Course Description Hallux valgus is a progressive deformity of the first metatarsophalangeal joint that changes the anatomy and biomechanical behaviors of the foot. To date, surgery is the only treatment that corrects deformity, though the recurrence rate is as high as 15 percent. This presentation will instruct a muscle strengthening approach for treatment. Unlike surgery, strengthening exercise will not correct the deformity, but instead exercise may reduce pain and the associated gait impairments which, in turn, may improve the mobility of people who live with the disorder. The presentation is organized in two parts. Part 1 details the anatomy, and describes how the foot is changed with deformity. Part 2 instructs in the strengthening exercise routine, and reviews the related literature. Instructions will be given for the short-foot, the toe-spread-out, and the heel-raise exercises. The exercise routine may be performed by almost anyone at home, and could be adopted into physical therapist practice with intent to strengthen the foot muscles as an adjunct to almost any protocol of care, but especially for the treatment of hallux valgus deformity. Course Objectives Instruct how the anatomy and biomechanics of the foot is typically altered by the progression of hallux valgus (bunion) deformity. Detail the role the muscles of the foot play in supporting weight, and describe the specific intrinsic and extrinsic muscles that should be targeted with strengthening exercise in the treatment of hallux valgus deformity. Instruct the muscle strengthening exercise routine that may counter the onset and progression of deformity. The exercise can be performed by individuals of any age, at home, and without special equipment. A supplemental hand-out showing the exercise will be provided. Speaker Biographies Dr. Ward Glasoe has been an academician for 15 years. He teaches anatomy, biomechanics, and exercise and sports medicine at the University of Minnesota, Department of the Rehabilitation Medicine, Division of Physical Therapy. His area of research is the foot, specifically the investigation of the structural characteristics that contribute to hallux valgus (bunion) deformity, and the related outcomes of physical therapy treatments (e.g. exercise; orthoses). Ward has authored 30 peer-reviewed medical journal articles. Prior to academia, Ward practiced physical therapy in the orthopedic clinical setting. He is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), and holds a specialty certification in athletic training with membership in the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA).

Prevailing theory suggests that a child’s brain would be more resilient to brain injury as it has more “plasticity” than an adult brain (Savage, 2012). However, emerging evidence is challenging this line of thought. This course will explore differences in neurometabolic responses to brain injury for children compared to adults, and describe the expected recovery processes for mild, moderate, and severe pediatric brain injuries. Finally, the course will offer current research of best-practices in assessment, and intervention for children who have experienced a brain injury. Course Objectives Identify types, causes and red flags of pediatric brain injury Contrast the differences in neurometabolic responses in brain injury for pediatric and adult patients Describe signs and symptoms of brain injury with respect to children and teens Explore assessment options for pediatric brain injuries Develop recommendations for intervention of children with pediatric brain injuries Speaker Biography Erin Simunds is an Instructor in the Doctorate of Physical Therapy program at Concordia University – St. Paul. She received her BS in physical therapy from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities and her MS in Therapeutic Science from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. She possesses an extensive background in providing pediatric therapy including fifteen years as a direct service professional and/or manager of school-based therapy contracts. Erin has varied research interests. She has written curriculum and conducted research for a successful social inclusion program called “Yes I Can” that assists adolescents with disabilities in increasing social competence and gaining lasting friendships. She also implemented a Pediatric Care Navigator program to assist families in coordinating access to care. Her other research interests include investigating the efficacy of therapy interventions for children with disabilities including functional outcomes, fitness, and bringing therapy into a camp setting for generalization of skills.

From managing illness to optimizing health, we are uniquely equipped to design customized exercise programs that enhance physical outcomes, improve overall fitness, and address potential medical complications that may arise in the older population. This course will help you identify risk factors and develop health promotion strategies to enhance health, fitness, and wellness. We will consider how to optimize patient education, motivation, and methods to enable individuals to maintain physical activity by transitioning to fitness programs that allow for carryover and progression at the facility, home, or community level. Course Objectives Discuss factors influencing health and wellness in older adults. Identify barriers to exercise and incorporate techniques to motivate older adults to exercise. Describe how to market and perform a well-rounded fitness screen at a wellness fair. Discuss methods to transition a client from skilled therapy to a fitness program. Identify community resources for appropriate fitness services for older adults. Describe different modes of fitness appropriate for older adults. Speaker Biographies Miranda received her DPT from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and completed the geriatric residency in physical therapy at the University of Minnesota in 2014. She works as a physical therapist at Saint Therese Rehab primarily in the outpatient health and wellness and home health settings. She is faculty for the geriatric residency, teaching aquatic therapy for older adults and last presented on evidence-based practice for balance and fall prevention for the MN APTA in 2016. She has a special interest in tai chi and health and wellness promotion in older adults. Lizzy graduated from the Mayo School of Health Sciences with a Doctorate of Physical Therapy. Following graduation, she completed the geriatric clinical residency program at the University of Minnesota. She is a board certified specialist in Geriatric Physical Therapy and is a Certified Exercise Expert of Aging Adults. She currently works at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System in a primary care based outpatient clinic. She is passionate about helping older adults successfully age.
Managing Acute Vertigo for the Non-Vestibular PT	4/21/2018	4/21/2018	1:30 PM	3:00 PM	4/21/2018 1:30 PM - 3:00 PM Presenter: Casey Byron, BS, MPT, CCCE & Dalerie Lieberz, PT, DPT, GCS Managing Acute Vertigo for the Non-Vestibular PT Speakers: Casey Byron, BS, MPT, CCCE & Dalerie Lieberz, PT, DPT, GCS Contact Hours: 1.5 Course Description Physical Therapy professionals have often touted that humans use three different systems to maintain their balance: 1) Vision 2) Sensation/Proprioception 3) Vestibular System. Acute care physical therapists routinely assess vision and sensation, however, often times, the vestibular system is not assessed, or thoroughly assessed, by the acute care PT. This may be due to a number of reasons, including the complexity of the terminology/jargon, lack of testing equipment, the confines of the hospital room, the medical complexity of the patient, and the level of confidence the acute PT has in treating patients with vestibular dysfunction. This course is designed to help demystify vestibular rehabilitation. It will give practical solutions to barriers and real world interventions to help the acute care PT treat patients with suspected acute vestibular hypofunction and Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo. These interventions are based off published APTA guidelines but are adapted in such a way as to "benignly" meet the confines of the acute patient in the acute care setting. Attendees will learn: Vestibular exam with video oculography or Frenzel goggles available. Vestibular exam without video oculography or Frenzel goggles available. Exams for differentiating central versus peripheral etiology. Canalith Reposition Techniques for BPPV for mobile patient (neck braces, medical lines, cervical precautions ect..). Adaptations to Canalith Reposition Techniques for BPPV for less mobile patient (cervical precautions) using the hospital bed controls, less complex or aggressive techniques. What unilateral hypofunction would look like and how to help treat it acutely and recommendations/follow up? How to intervene when you are not confident with your skills or the patient’s medical fragility? How to get better at reading nystagmus? (Use of phone apps and YouTube videos). Course Objectives Demonstrate ability to perform screening tests accurately for differentiating peripheral vs central etiology. Understand how to assess an acute patient for vestibular peripheral hypofunction, and what is the appropriate course of treatment for this type of patient based on the APTA's Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG) from 2016. Recognize different patterns of nystagmus involved with Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) and use this information to formulate a safe and effective treatment for canalith repositioning. Learn 3 different strategies to adapt vestibular tests and interventions based on the unique confines of the acute hospital patient/environment that an acute therapist can use in their own practice. Speaker Biographies: Casey Byron, BS, MPT, CCCE; BS Marquette University 1996, MPT Marquette University 1998 Position: Physical Therapy Education Coordinator at Hennepin County Medical Center Casey has been a clinical physical therapist for the last 19 years. Areas of clinical expertise include vestibular rehabilitation and telemedicine. He completed American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) competency based training in vestibular rehabilitation at the University of Miami (2001) and APTA Cervicogenic Dizziness competency training at Northwestern University (2013). He currently practices at Hennepin County Medical Center (HCMC) providing vestibular rehabilitation in the acute and inpatient rehabilitation settings. Additionally, Mr. Byron serves as HCMC's Education Coordinator and Center Coordinator of Clinical Education. Mr. Byron is a member of the APTA and a member of the MNPTA Neurorehabilitation Education Subcommittee. Dalerie Lieberz, PT, DPT, GCS Position: Assistant Professor of Physical Therapy at The College of St. Scholastica Dr. Lieberz is a full time physical therapy faculty member at The College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, MN. Her primary role at the college is as the Director of Clinical Education. Within this role she coordinates coursework related to clinical skills and also teaches the vestibular rehabilitation content. She is the faculty administrator of a pro bono student clinic on campus which integrates clinical practice with learning. Dr. Lieberz is an active member of the APTA and recognized as a Geriatric Clinical Specialist (GCS). Vestibular rehabilitation is an area of clinical expertise. She has successfully completed the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) competency based training in vestibular rehabilitation at Emory University (2007), Cervicogenic Dizziness: An Evidence-based Competency Course (2014) and advanced APTA competency training at Duke University (2014). She maintains current clinical practice working within a balance center providing care for patients with vertigo and balance impairment as a member of an interprofessional team.

It has been increasingly recognized that there is not just one "cure" for SCI, as there are heterogeneous and complex pathologies involved. Instead, there are many different strategies that may provide recovery of function. This course will provide an overview of human SCI and the relevant pathophysiology, provide updates on the current status of clinical trials in North America and beyond, and discuss the rationale behind these exciting new studies. Course Objectives Understand the pathophysiology and epidemiology of human spinal cord injury Understand the rationale behind new clinical trials in human spinal cord injury Appreciate the current status of new clinical trials in human spinal cord injury Speaker Biographies Dr. Parr is a neurosurgeon scientist, with fellowship training in Complex Spinal Neurosurgery. She has a strong translational research background. As a PhD student during her neurosurgical residency at the University of Toronto, she studied the effects of adult neural stem cell transplantation into the injured adult rat spinal cord, and successfully defended her thesis on this subject. During this time, she also graduated from the Clinician Investigator Program. She continued to pursue her interest in SCI at the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis while she was the David Cahill Fellow in Complex Spinal Neurosurgery. She provided expertise in the development of a large animal mini-pig model for studying spinal cord injury and conducted a project labeling cells for MRI tracking using iron oxide nanoparticles. Dr. Parr has a demonstrated record of successful and productive research projects, and is currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota. She was also recently involved as the site PI in the Stem Cells, Inc clinical trial transplanting fetal derived neural stem cells into human patients with chronic SCI.

He worked for a couple of years before returning to the University of Minnesota to pursue physical therapy. He completed the Doctorate Program at the University of Minnesota in 2015. He then pursued the Orthopaedic Physical Therapy Residency with Fairview Health Services from 2015-2016. His final internship during the DPT program was at the Orofacial Pain Clinic in Moos Tower on the University of Minnesota campus where his schedule was completely based on patients with TMD and TMJ issues. He continues to treat patients with TMJ issues as well as a general orthopedic population in his current role with the Institute for Athletic Medicine in Burnsville.

Speakers: Bill Koch PT, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT; Kaitlin Schultz PT, DPT; Josh Greensweig PT, DPT Contact Hours: 2 Course Description Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) therapy (also known as Kaatsu, Hypoxic Training or Occlusion Training) is a method of exercise which leverages the body's physiological response to metabolic stressors to maximize strength and hypertrophy gains. BFR utilizes straps or bands to regulate the blood flow into and out of a limb to create an environment ideal for stimulating change in the tissues of the body. The bands are placed on the upper arm or the upper thigh and are inflated to fully occlude the venous return from the limb and limit arterial flow into the limb to ~80%. This environment pools blood in the limb and with it the metabolic by-products of exercise. These metabolites then act at the physiological level to stimulate changes in muscle strength and cross sectional area. Typically high intensity/high load training is required to achieve these physiologic responses, but with BFR low loads are enough to meet the threshold for effect. This makes BFR an ideal adjunct to exercise in a rehabilitative environment. Course Objectives Discuss the history and physiology of blood flow restriction (BFR) training. Discuss the current available evidence for BFR training. Present case studies demonstrating implementation of BFR in clinical practice. Demonstrate the implementation of BFR in the upper and lower extremity. Speaker Biographies Dr. Koch graduated from Marquette University with a Master’s in Physical Therapy (2001). As physical therapists, we are uniquely situated to help patients living with heart failure by improving quality of life and decreasing overall cost of care. This course will provide an overview of the current evidence for physical therapy management of heart failure, specifically focusing on appropriate exercise prescription based on the New York Heart Association (NYHA) Functional Classification. The course will give a brief background on the signs and symptoms of heart failure, medical and rehabilitation management of heart failure, as well as an in depth discussion of advanced heart failure management including use of left ventricular assist devices (LVAD). Detailed instruction on how to safely care for and rehabilitate a patient who has an LVAD will be provided, including LVAD parameters, vital signs, and clinical monitoring of exercise in patients with LVADs. Current evidence for exercise in patients with LVADs will be discussed. The course will discuss this patient population across the continuum of care including criteria for outpatient cardiac rehab. It will utilize a variety of teaching strategies including lecture, and demonstration, and will include case studies to assist the learner in applying course material. Course Objectives Accurately determine exercise precautions and monitoring of patients with left ventricular assistive device. Apply current evidence accurately for safe exercise prescription in patients with NYHA classes I-IV heart failure. Determine appropriate exercise intervention options (e.g. high-intensity training) in patients with advanced heart failure. Speaker Biographies Kelli Nielsen is an assistant professor of physical therapy at St. Catherine University teaching primarily applied neuromuscular and cardiopulmonary content in the doctorate of physical therapy program. She continues to practice at the University of Minnesota Health working in acute care, typically in the intensive care unit including the cardiopulmonary ICU, and on the step down ICU unit. She is also a certified neurological clinical specialist following completion of a residency at University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle, WA. Deidre King is an experienced clinician with over 10 years of experience in acute care physical therapy, working primarily in the cardiopulmonary unit. Deidre has been an integral member of process improvement initiatives to improve the care provided to our cardiac population. Research shows that these impairments often go undetected and untreated. In fact, some patients find suffering from physical impairments can be more devastating than psychological ones. Furthermore, physical disability is a leading cause of distress in this population. The scientific literature has shown that rehabilitation improves pain, function, and quality of life in cancer survivors. This presentation will cover use of exercise to treat cancer related impairments. We will review evidence based research on exercise for cancer related fatigue, neuropathy and lymphedema. We will then review recommendations for initial approach to exercise in the cancer patient, including recommendations on when to refer back to a provider, and approach to transition to community exercise and the role of a cancer-specific, technology-based platform. Course Objectives Learn prevalence of cancer related fatigue. Recognize early signs of lymphedema. Learn most up to date recommendations on exercise for cancer related impairments of neuropathy, fatigue and lymphedema. Understand the role of a technology based platform for cancer patients. Speaker Biographies Liat Goldman, MD: My primary area of focus is cancer rehabilitation. I believe in using an integrative approach when working with the patients, to create a treatment plan that can be achieved. I am the medical director for cancer rehabilitation program and co-director of the Survivorship program at Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute and Virginia Piper Cancer Institute. I attended Tulane University School of Medicine, completed Physical Medicine and Rehabilition residency at Temple University in Philadelphia, and Cancer Rehabilitation Fellowship at MD Anderson in Houston Texas. I am member of American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Cathy Skinner, MA: Since 2008, I have worked as a pioneer in the field of exercise for cancer recovery. I was the first certified ACSM Cancer Exercise Specialist in MN. I am a Master teacher for ACSM and I authored The Art of Well’s Exercise for Cancer Recovery™ book. I teach Exercise for Cancer Recovery™ classes, speak at support groups, and present at conferences. Currently, I work as the CEO and Founder of Thrivors™ a mobile-technology platform for cancer survivors and their loved-ones. The didactic portion will include a review of the historical background of persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) and the process by which its formal diagnostic criteria were established in 2017. Recent research on possible pathophysiological mechanisms and treatment strategies will be presented. The differential diagnosis of PPPD will be discussed with an explanation of symptoms and signs that distinguish PPPD from other causes of chronic vestibular and balance problems. Then, example cases will be presented and discussed in an interactive manner with the audience. Particular emphasis will be placed on evaluation and treatment strategies that can be utilized in physical therapy practices. Course Objectives Recognize the diagnostic criteria for persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) and be able to apply them to real world clinical situations. Understand the differential diagnosis of PPPD and related conditions. Conceptualize physical therapy interventions as part of a comprehensive treatment plan for patients with PPPD. Speaker Biography Jeffrey P. Staab, MD, MS is Professor of Psychiatry and Consultant in the Departments of Psychiatry and Psychology and Otorhinolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN. He and his colleagues in the Mayo Integrated Neurovestibular Team evaluate and treat more than 2000 patients with vestibular and balance disorders each year. His research centers on problems at the interface of otology, neurology, and psychiatry. He is best known for investigations of chronic dizziness. He chaired the international committee that defined persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) under the auspices of the Barany Society. Dr. Staab received a BS in chemical engineering from Northwestern University, MS in bioengineering from Carnegie-Mellon University, and MD from the University of Pittsburgh. He completed an internship in internal medicine and residency in psychiatry at the National Naval Medical Center (now Walter Reed National Military Medical Center) in Bethesda, MD, followed by a fellowship in traumatic stress disorders. He previously served on the faculties of the University of Florida and University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Staab is author or co-author of 120 scientific articles, reviews and abstracts. He serves on the editorial boards of five scientific journals in the fields of otorhinolaryngology and psychosomatic medicine.

Chmielewski, PT, PhD, SCS and Adam Meierbachtol PT, DPT, SCS, ATC Contact Hours: 2 Course Description ACL reconstruction surgical techniques and rehabilitation interventions have evolved over time, and it has been assumed that functional outcomes were quite good. However, recent studies have shown that only 40-60% of the ACL reconstruction population successfully returns to sport at the pre injury level, even up to 4 years post-operative. Fear of re-injury has been cited as the most common reason for not returning to sport at all or at the pre-injury level. Additionally, fear of re-injury has been shown to influence other rehabilitation outcomes (e.g. self-reported knee function). Measurement of fear of re-injury is not standard across clinical settings, but questionnaires can be used to quantify fear of re-injury levels after ACL reconstruction. Methods to implement these questionnaires into clinical practice will be discussed as well as how the questionnaires can help identify individuals in need of intervention to reduce fear of re-injury. Research on interventions to address fear of re-injury will be reviewed including original pilot research on the use of a progressive plyometric training program to simultaneously improve physical and psychological readiness for returning to sport after ACL reconstruction. Course Objectives Describe fear of re-injury following ACLR and its effect on the return to sport rate and other rehabilitation outcomes. Discuss ways to measure fear of re-injury after ACL reconstruction. Identify interventions that may be used to decrease fear of re-injury for the purpose of facilitating the return to sport and improving other rehabilitation outcomes. Speaker Biographies Terese L. Chmielewski, PT, PhD, SCS is currently a Physical Therapist/Research Scientist at TRIA Orthopaedic Center and affiliate Associate Professor at the University of Minnesota in the Division of Rehabiltation Science. She was previously an Associate Professor at the University of Florida. Dr. Chmielewski completed her undergraduate and graduate physical therapy degree at the College of St. Scholastica. She worked in outpatient practice prior to completing a sports physical therapy residence. She went on to complete a PhD in Biomechanics and Movement Science at the University of Delaware. Dr. Chmielewski has had 43 peer-reviewed publications she has received excellence in education/teaching awards from both the Sports and Orthopaedic Sections of the American Physical Therapy Association. Adam Meierbachtol, PT, DPT, SCS, ATC earned his bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training from Gustavus Adolphus College and his DPT from the University of Minnesota in 2009. He practices at TRIA Orthopaedic Center and earned his sports clinical specialty in 2012. He is active in clinical research and has published and lectured on ACL rehabilitation, hop testing, and advanced training after ACLR, and fear of re-injury.
