The session will be organized around topic tables with advocacy experts hosting each table where issues are presented, and dialogue will take place. A short synopsis of the discussion will be written up for advocacy leaders to channel your feedback, input, and ideas into future advocacy efforts. Trauma has far-reaching public health implications, and physical therapists in all settings work with patients who have experienced it. This presentation and discussion will introduce the topic of trauma, outline key components of trauma-informed care, and explain how PTs are ideally positioned to support patients in their healing process. Considering Deafblindness Across the Lifespan - Not Everyone is Helen Keller		4/18/2020	4/18/2020	10:15 AM	11:45 AM	4/18/2020 10:15 AM - 11:45 AM Presenter: Cathy Lyle, MSEd; and Michelle Hobbs PCS, MSPT The influence of combined sensory deficits or differences in our clients affect how they are able to incorporate and understand our therapeutic interventions. To obtain better outcomes and improve therapy relationships it is necessary to understand what these sensory difference mean to your patient. One of the main things we miss in therapy is in-depth knowledge of how to help your client anticipate and predict what is going to happen during therapy. How we understand and communicate with people who have deaf-blindness makes all the difference in our outcomes and in carry-over into our client’s lives. We will provide you with practical knowledge of how to achieve this from many perspectives, as humans, as educators and as therapist in this unique opportunity to tap into one of our state’s leading experts in deaf-blind education, Cathy Lyle, and a physical therapist, Michelle Hobbs, who has had the opportunity to learn directly from Cathy, from the Minnesota Low Incidence Project and apply this knowledge with great success to her clients.

As educators, advocates, and providers of care, physical therapists and physical therapy assistants are in an excellent position to not only promote individual health, but optimize community wellness. By understanding target populations, learning about community resources, and understanding the advantages of evidence-based health programming, you can partner with other community stakeholders to extend your professional reach in helping people age successfully.
Managing ACL injuries in the Highschool and College Athlete- A Modern Approach from the Front Lines		4/18/2020	4/18/2020	10:15 AM	11:45 AM	4/18/2020 10:15 AM - 11:45 AM Presenter: Julie Eibensteiner PT, DPT, CSCS A presentation on the management of ACL injuries from a cash-based physical therapist who utilizes two decades of current experience on the front lines of youth, club and college soccer and ten years of independent practice committed to practicality and relevant technology. Information to be presented will include: 1. The good news and bad news of the current state of ACL injury rehab and mitigation. 2. A review of the current best measures of assessing readiness for return to competition and reducing the risk of 2nd injury. 3. Training the brain - considerations of motor learning that often get missed but should be considered to encourage rehab to "stick". 4. Separating the signal from the noise - technology is great but what is truly useful? You do not need a million dollar lab if you know what to measure.
Managing Pelvic Floor Dysfunction		4/18/2020	4/18/2020	10:15 AM	11:45 AM	4/18/2020 10:15 AM - 11:45 AM Presenter: Katherine Shephard, PT, DPT; and Paul Niemuth, PT, DSc, OCS This course is an introduction to basic evaluation and treatment of pelvic floor dysfunction. All PT's should be able to identify and provide basic treatment ideas in many different clinical practice settings. Special emphasis will be placed on core activation and breathing techniques. Clinical application of pelvic floor anatomy will be presented. Various conditions discussed will include incontinence, pelvic floor pain, diastasis rectus abdominus management, and pediatric conditions.
NMES Refresher Lab: Incorporating Efficient Use of Electrical Stimulation into Clinical Practice		4/18/2020	4/18/2020	10:15 AM	11:45 AM	4/18/2020 10:15 AM - 11:45 AM Presenter: Amanda Simone DPT, CLT-LANA This course will focus on a review of NMES principles and supporting evidence as they apply to clinical application and parameter adjustment. We will briefly review the physics of electrical stimulation as they apply to clinical application, the physiologic response to NMES, motor points, and evidence to support the use of NMES and parameter selection. The majority of the time will then be spent in lab practicing the actual set up and parameter adjustments specific to various care studies with emphasis on motor point identification to more efficiently obtain the desired response and parameter manipulation to optimize response. The primary goal of this course will be to increase the participants comfort and efficiency with NMES application to allow increased utilization in clinic. * Participants are asked to bring a handheld e-stim machine as well as electrodes

When you see adult athletes wanting to return to extreme training, how prepared do you feel in selecting assessments, and then bridging the program design gap for a progressive return to play? This course answers these questions, beginning with the variables that define today’s popular extreme programs, to identifying and measuring the physiological demands, considering your patient’s age-related changes, and then offering an evidence-based algorithm to help your patients progressively return to play.

These outcomes can be detrimental to the healthcare practitioner, their patients, their employers and their professional license. This presentation will highlight recent research on burnout among North American physiotherapists, contributors to and strategies to mitigate burnout among this population.
Comprehensive Assessment Tools for the Aging Adult		4/18/2020	4/18/2020	1:45 PM	3:15 PM	4/18/2020 1:45 PM - 3:15 PM Presenter: Mary Horoshak PT, DPT The population of aging adults is the fastest growing population in America. Currently 10,000 people per day enter the Medicare system. In 2020, the population of adults over the age of 85 is projected to be 6.6 million. It’s imperative that physical therapists be able to identify appropriate assessments for this population as they present with various diagnoses and are treated across different practice settings. However, this growing population is not the only challenge presenting to physical therapists. Many therapist are being confronted with increased regulations, productivity standards, and limited budgets while trying to provide a comprehensive evaluation. By attending this course, you will learn appropriate evidence-based assessment tools to thoroughly assess an older adult. These assessment tools are effective in time, portability, cost and ease of set-up. They can easily be performed in most practice settings. This course will help you identify the testing parameters and the evidence-based clinimetrics of these tools. It will also allow you how to identify deficits and limitations in your patients based on the outcome measuresgenerated and how they may be used to guide goal writing and treatment plans. Physical Therapy Management Post Lumbar Spine Surgery		4/18/2020	4/18/2020	1:45 PM	3:15 PM	4/18/2020 1:45 PM - 3:15 PM Presenter: Ryan Buss PT, DPT, OCS; Samuel Fischer PT, DPT; and Madeline Lee PT, DPT Surgical interventions for management of lumbar spinal stenosis and lumbar disc herniation are increasing. Physical therapists often play a critical role in patient recovery following selected surgical interventions. Knowledge of the surgical procedures used is important to provide care for our patients. Furthermore, the expected outcomes of the selected surgical procedure are fundamental for maximizing patient recovery. Physical therapy evaluation and treatment are dependent on the timing of the surgical procedure and patient activity tolerance. We will use lecture, patient cases and small group discussions to accomplish the following: 1. Understanding the basics of surgical procedures commonly used in the lumbar spine. 2. Performing suitable physical therapy evaluation with knowledge of surgical procedures. 3. Developing appropriate physical therapy treatment plan for optimal patient outcomes. 4. Providing strategies for managing patients with ongoing symptoms following surgical procedures.
Two Paths to the Same Destination- PT in the Emergency Department		4/18/2020	4/18/2020	1:45 PM	3:15 PM	4/18/2020 1:45 PM - 3:15 PM Presenter: John Seip PT, DPT, CSMT; and Peter Drinkwine PT, DPT Physical therapy practice in the emergency department (ED) is challenging, exciting, unique, and incredibly rewarding, but how do you get there? Practicing competently in the emergency department is one thing, but building a program is another. John is an experienced physical therapist that built the emergency department program. Peter trained with John as a student and as a new graduate PT, who joined the program early and gained experience through mentorship and independent practice in the ED. The intent of this course is to share our experiences from two perspectives in program development and give some data concerning the first year of full-time practice. We have learned a few surprising things. 1) New graduates are well prepared to work in the emergency department within one-two years of experience. 2) Mentoring students helped improve the program development experience. 3) Practicing in the emergency department is not as intimidating as it may sound, but does require advanced skills in communication, dealing with severe anxiety and pain, spinal manual therapy, vestibular dysfunction/rehabilitation, and differential diagnosis. We hope to inspire students, new graduates, and experienced therapists who are interested in pursuit of emergency department physical therapy practice.
Wheelchair Evaluation: Bringing it Back to Basics		4/18/2020	4/18/2020	1:45 PM	3:15 PM	4/18/2020 1:45 PM - 3:15 PM Presenter: Kristin Hanowski DPT, ATP Physical Therapists play a key role in performing wheelchair evaluations. The wheelchair evaluation can be overwhelming, especially for the novice clinician. This course will start with the basics and give you the tools and strategies you need to successfully perform a wheelchair evaluation. We will identify pertinent subjective items to guide the evaluation, complete hands on practice with postural assessments in both the seated and supine position, and perform wheelchair measurements. These strategies will help you identify and optimize seating impairments for some basic neurologic cases. Learn the basics of the wheelchair assessment from subjective interview to outcome measurements in this interactive and fun session!

A Comprehensive Approach to Vestibular Migraine		4/18/2020	4/18/2020	3:30 PM	5:00 PM	4/18/2020 3:30 PM - 5:00 PM Presenter: Sara Oxborough, PT; and Patricia Maetzod, PT, DPT, MSOT Vestibular migraines are complex conditions that manifest with a variety of symptoms from general lightheadedness to severe vertigo, nausea and imbalance. These symptoms can result in significant functional impairments and disabilities and can make developing an effective treatment plan difficult. It takes a comprehensive approach to education and treatment in order to successfully identify triggers and manage symptoms. This course is designed to explore the complexities of evaluating and treating patients with vestibular migraines. You will learn about diagnostic criteria, differential diagnoses, important examination components and effective management techniques. You will be provided with information on educating your patient and assisting them in self-management of their condition. You will have opportunity to examine the literature supporting these recommendations and learn from case study applications.
Building Theraputic Alliance- Strengthen Relationships and Improve Outcomes		4/18/2020	4/18/2020	3:30 PM	5:00 PM	4/18/2020 3:30 PM - 5:00 PM Presenter: Peter Freeborn PT, DPT A strong relationship is the backbone to a successful healthcare experience from the client’s perspective. However, clinicians are pressured for more productivity, increased client volumes, decreasing duration of care, and all while improving outcomes for clients. These demands negatively impact the quality of care. Most clinicians have rapport building skills, but eventually they encounter a client who pushes them past their capability and a healthy rapport feels impossible to foster. Therapeutic Alliance (TA) is the relationship and the means by which both parties engage with one another to effect positive changes. The theory of TA is rooted in psychology from concepts of Roger’s Unconditional Positive Regard to Borodin’s Working Alliance. However, in recent years the model has been researched, refined and applied specifically to physical therapy. This course provides a conceptual framework of therapeutic alliance, verbal and non-verbal communication techniques, how to repair a rupture, and examines the evidence of improved outcomes with strong TA. Attendees will be able to discuss and practice applying TA principles using case studies. Presenters and attendees will describe how TA has been incorporated into entry-level PT and PTA education programs. They will also discuss opportunities and challenges for implementing TA into practice and education.
Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Examination and Intervention of Clients with Heart Failure		4/18/2020	4/18/2020	3:30 PM	5:00 PM	4/18/2020 3:30 PM - 5:00 PM Presenter: Kristin Lefebvre PT, PhD, CCS The subject matter of this session will include an update on the CPG titled Physical Therapy for Adults Following Acute Exacerbation of Chronic Heart Failure published in Physical Therapy Fall 2019. In this session, the presentation will include results uncovered following critical appraisal of the literature on appropriate interventions for patients across the continuum of care. We will discuss the current standards of practice and present three case studies of patients that reflect appropriate interventions.
Congenital Muscular Torticollis Evaluation and Treatment Using the APTA CPG		4/18/2020	4/18/2020	3:30 PM	5:00 PM	4/18/2020 3:30 PM - 5:00 PM Presenter: Therese O'Bright, DPT, BCPCS; and Julie Hause, DPT, BCPCS The APTA has recently published the updated version of the Clinical practice guideline on congenital muscular torticollis. This course will provide insight into the interpretation and application of the torticollis CPG in a busy Clinic environment. Topics will include the use of different measurement techniques; assessment of head shape; completing a systems review; education including positioning and prevention; and cranial deformation as it relates to torticollis. A review of how the clinical practice guideline was implemented in a diverse clinic environment and our outcomes.

One student or student group from each DPT program will present research selected by their faculty based on both quality and clinical relevance.
The Use of Heavy Lifting as a Compliment to Core Strengthening for Low Back Pain		4/18/2020	4/18/2020	3:30 PM	5:00 PM	4/18/2020 3:30 PM - 5:00 PM Presenter: Olivia Full PT, DPT Literature support for treatment of low back pain continues to evolve. Newer thoughts revolve around the controversy of core strengthening and heavy lifting with the idea that we are not pushing patients hard enough to meet the demands of their functional activities. The aim of the course is to learn how to implement heavy lifting treatment strategies safely and effectively in order to advance patients to the next level of their rehabilitation capabilities. Lecture and lab activities will include the use and progressions of the dead lift, squats and lunges to complement other core activities.
