This course will then explore implications of when children fall outside these norms. Information will be provided related to clinical assessment, treatment & ongoing care for those with common pediatric torsional conditions including in-toeing/ out-toeing, developmental hip dysplasia, metatarsus adductus, tarsal coalition, Blount’s Disease, etc.  Course will also highlight discussion on clinical assessment, treatment & ongoing management for those with musculoskeletal conditions including Legg-Calve-Perthes & Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphyses.
Converting a Private Practice to a Non-Profit: Is it Crazy?		4/15/2023	4/15/2023	9:10 AM	11:10 AM	4/15/2023 9:10 AM - 11:10 AM Presenter: Melanie Brennan PT, DPT From 2011 to 2015, I worked hard to start a private practice from scratch, only to realize within 4 years that my social mission and passion to optimally improve the health and independence of my patients through through therapy and wellness for adults with physical and neurologic disability well beyond the health insurance model of care did not equal having enough money to pay the bills or my paycheck. With a staff of 10 and the reality of either closing our doors or fighting to stay open, I decided to convert my practice to a nonprofit. Today, this thriving nonprofit has improved the health and independence of more than 2,000 people in Southeast MN and is growing by the day. Join Melanie Brennan, PT, DPT along with members of her operations team to dig into nonprofit law, accounting, organizational design, employee/volunteer relations, customer relations as well as ethical and social considerations. In this course, you will be guided to explore your own social mission related to physical therapy. You will learn about our ethical call to probono participation in volunteer our skills as therapist and why and how you can and should participate in them right in your backyard in delivery of skilled health and wellness for the underserved. You will also learn about the skills beyond therapy that are required to found and run a social entrepreneurship in physical therapy, explore different organizational models, and learn both the rewards and struggles of running and working in this model.

Clinicians will learn key signs and symptoms associated with various vestibular pathology to assist them in accurate treatment or referral. Recent updates in evidence will be presented. The course is appropriate for clinicians who are new to the area of vestibular rehabilitation, as well as for those with some beginner skills looking for updated research and to refresh their skill set.
Good Things Come to Those Who (Use) Weight		4/15/2023	4/15/2023	9:10 AM	11:10 AM	4/15/2023 9:10 AM - 11:10 AM Presenter: Cameron Cooper PT, DPT, APTA Board Certified Orthopedic Specialist; Madeline Mosher PT, DPT Let us talk about our fears and bias when it comes to using heavier weights in the clinic. We continue to see research push that a patient will benefit from exercise, yet therapists continue to underload or are simply fearful of loading because it might make them sore. This debate rages strong in clinics across the state, so let us work to settle the discussion, and embrace the SORENESS. The aim of this talk is to challenge your perceptions or bias of heavy lifting or heavy loading with patients of all types. Be it acute, chronic, or even post-surgical, these patients will only have good come to them if we load them appropriately. Make them feel like they did something and make them feel it tomorrow. The focus will be discussion on tissue physiology, tissue tolerance, the role of pain in our clinical decision making and our own fear with these types of exercises. Bring your questions and prepare to be challenged, because ultimately good things come to those who use weight.
Osteoarthritis and Osteoporosis: An Orthopedic Update for the Older Adult		4/15/2023	4/15/2023	9:10 AM	11:10 AM	4/15/2023 9:10 AM - 11:10 AM Presenter: Matt Quanrud PT, DPT, OCS Osteoarthritis and osteoporosis are common conditions that are misunderstood and mistreated. Surgery and other expensive pharmacological management is typically seen as the primary intervention for osteoarthritis by the general population. However, this is in stark contrast to actual recommendations seen in the literature and clinical practice guidelines. Various forms of resistance exercise are often underutilized despite the evidence based benefits this type of exercise provides the osteoporotic and frail population. After this class, you will be able to apply the updated evidence directly to patient care and empower your patients through education and active treatments to improve their quality of life.
Strengthening Your Ethical Muscles - Practical Application of Models to Solve Ethical Situations		4/15/2023	4/15/2023	9:10 AM	11:10 AM	4/15/2023 9:10 AM - 11:10 AM Presenter: Aaron Rindflesch PhD, MPT, NCS; Erin Simunds MS, PT **qualifies for 2.0 Ethics CE credits required by the MN Board of PT This course will allow attendees to collaboratively address ethical dilemmas chosen from PT and PTA practice, including those with student involvement. We will compare three commonly used ethical frameworks, identify the range of ethical concerns typically faced in practice; then apply the frameworks to determine the most appropriate course of action consistent with legal and regulatory guidelines. An underlying theme of this course is that clinicians can treat their ethical development similar to their development of other PT skills: it takes time, energy, and guidance from others to improve continuously. We will attempt to facilitate rich ethical discussions among attendees, respect all viewpoints, and recommend ethical action consistent with relevant regulations and our state practice act. Participation in the course will allow licensees to meet the two-hour ethics continuing education requirement from the Minnesota Board of Physical Therapy.

Exercise Guidelines for Persons with Spinal Cord Injury: Implementation of an Exercise Research Protocol		4/15/2023	4/15/2023	1:20 PM	2:50 PM	4/15/2023 1:20 PM - 2:50 PM Presenter: Megan Gill PT, DPT; Dan Veith RCEP, MS Individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) have lower levels of physical activity compared to the non-disabled population. Exercise guidelines recommend moderate or vigorous exercise to improve cardiovascular health and reduce cardiometabolic risk factors in persons with SCI. Additionally, strength training is recommended for this population. Due to the individualized nature of SCI, exercise prescriptions should be tailored to each person’s specific functional abilities. Special accommodations may be needed for individuals with greater deficits. Regular exercise is important in this population to prevent complications related to secondary health conditions and associated hospitalizations. Finally, we will provide an example of our recent research work that implemented an exercise program designed from the SCI-specific exercise guidelines in persons with chronic SCI. This exercise program asked participants to perform arm-cycling in their homes with digital monitoring from study staff.
I Have a Patient with Functional Neurological Disorder, Now What?		4/15/2023	4/15/2023	1:20 PM	2:50 PM	4/15/2023 1:20 PM - 2:50 PM Presenter: Cassandra Anderson PT, DPT This course will provide current information on Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) including definition of subtypes, pathophysiology, prevalence, medical diagnosis and prognosis. By providing the most current knowledge and information will provide a consensus for terminology in order to further clinical decision making and appropriate interdisciplinary communication and patient care. This course will also provide an in-depth review on current evidence surrounding FND and physical therapy including examination techniques, treatment strategies and prognosis. Clinicians will be able to identify common causes of FND that will most likely present to physical therapy, exam findings in order to differentiate FND from other diagnoses for appropriate and confident interdisciplinary communication and treatment strategies that clinicians can implement on day one after the course. Case studies will also be presented for discussion between presenters and clinicians in order to further clinical decision making. Part of the presentation will be specifically aimed towards Persistent Postural-Perceptual Dizziness (3PD) and physical therapy as this is a common presentation of FND that is seen in outpatient physical therapy clinics. Cassandra Anderson, PT, DPT will present her recently completed systematic review on 3PD and PT in order to establish best practice.
Lead from Within: Clinical Leadership and Compassionate Care through the Tough Times		4/15/2023	4/15/2023	1:20 PM	2:50 PM	4/15/2023 1:20 PM - 2:50 PM Presenter: Jen Barnes MSW, LICSW, TCTSY-F, RYT500, YA-CEP These are tough times to work in healthcare. Even harder is doing so in ways that align with why you became a provider in the first place. With high caseloads and increasingly more asked of providers, it is common to grow apathetic, feel less compassionate towards patients than you once did, and even feel stuck in a job you used to love. But it doesn't have to be this way. There is a way to connect with your inner leader and bring your authentic, human self to work so you can provide high-quality care and pave the way for your colleagues to do the same. According to Abdulaziz Al-Sawai in the journal article Leadership of Healthcare Professionals: Where Do We Stand?, numerous studies have shown that autonomous healthcare workers with direct responsibility for their patients do not respond well to authoritarian leadership to lead highly qualified healthcare professionals. As a physical therapist, this likely rings true for you. Instead, there are ways to lead from where you are in your clinical position. That’s what this workshop is all about. In this workshop, you will learn the three key components of clinical leadership, leading from where you are as a clinician, including (1) bringing humanity (back) into healthcare workplaces, (2) focusing on your locus of influence, and (3) advocacy for yourself. These three components are essential for you to thrive and to help your teammates and patients thrive as well. If we as providers want the systems to reflect our values and to align with why we became providers in the first place (i.e., to help people), it’s time for us to embrace Self-leadership and start leading from within.
Pelvic Health Screening and Initial Interventions for the Orthopedic Therapist		4/15/2023	4/15/2023	1:20 PM	2:50 PM	4/15/2023 1:20 PM - 2:50 PM Presenter: Andria Strawn PT, DPT; Jessica Blaisdell PT, DPT, PCES Orthopedic physical therapists have many of the skills needed to screen for pelvic floor dysfunction and can initiate basic treatment during their early sessions while awaiting a pelvic health consult. Understand what postural and movement patterns correlate with high- and low- tone pelvic floor dysfunction. Learn how to take the appropriate next steps including knowing when to refer to a Pelvic Health specialist. In this session, you’ll learn and practice exercises that promote optimal pelvic floor mobility, deep core coordination, and proper intraabdominal pressure management versus traditional Kegel exercises.
Rehabilitation in the ICU for patients with COVID 19		4/15/2023	4/15/2023	1:20 PM	2:50 PM	4/15/2023 1:20 PM - 2:50 PM Presenter: Jillene Chitulangoma PT, DPT; Casey Schneider OT This course will describe the spectrum of symptoms associated with COVID 19 ranging from the mild to more severe symptoms including ARDS requiring ICU admission. We will review current literature highlighting the importance of mobility and activity with the ICU patient population including those with COVID 19 to decrease the negative effects of immobility/inactivity including: delirium, ICU acquired weakness, blood clots, bed sores, pneumonia, increased days on mechanical ventilation, functional decline, urinary tract infections, increased hospital and ICU length of stay, increased hospital and patient health care costs, and Post Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS). We will review a COVID 19 ICU patient case study and discuss specific ICU PT/OT treatment interventions, activity/mobility progression, and use of PT/OT functional outcome measures.
Social and Structural Determinants of Health: Considerations in Serving the Older Adult		4/15/2023	4/15/2023	1:20 PM	2:50 PM	4/15/2023 1:20 PM - 2:50 PM Presenter: Emma Hintz PT, DPT; Sarah Hong PT, DPT, GCS In this course, we will define and explore how social and structural determinants of health impact the older adult. More specifically, we will identify how these determinants and health disparities impact the older adult in physical therapy care, and how these can facilitate or become major barriers to receiving optimal care. Lastly, we will integrate this knowledge into a case study example, in order to provide practice into applying this into our actual practice as physical therapists working with older adults, regardless of setting.

Bladder, Bowel, and Sexual Considerations in the Neurologic Population		4/15/2023	4/15/2023	3:00 PM	4:30 PM	4/15/2023 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM Presenter: Allie Triola PT, DPT; Lexi Barletta PT, DPT Patients with neurologic impairments, such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, and spinal cord injury often present with bladder, bowel, and sexual dysfunction as a product of their neurologic injury. In the aftermath of medical intervention and rehabilitation, these impairments persist and are often forgotten or unaddressed. Physical therapists have a critical role in screening and referring for impairments of bladder, bowel, and sexual dysfunction, and the therapist treating in the acute care setting may even be able to help in management of these conditions. Later on, pelvic health therapists who understand the unique considerations of patients with neurologic conditions are needed to help patients return to participation in life roles without inference of bladder and bowel dysfunction. Pelvic floor therapists can also help patients return to intimacy and sexual activity. The course will introduce the learner to the pelvic floor anatomy and the neural pathways that control bladder, bowel, and sexual function. The speakers will address the ways in which various neurologic diagnosis affect these pathways and the musculature involved. The course will address the ways in which multidisciplinary team members manage patient's bladder and bowel dysfunction in the acute setting and how therapist's input can improve management. Pelvic floor therapists will learn how to adapt treatment for bladder, bowel, and sexual dysfunction for patients with neurologic conditions, including examination, intervention, and outcomes so that they are able to begin treating this population.
Diving into Direct Access in Physical Therapy		4/15/2023	4/15/2023	3:00 PM	4:30 PM	4/15/2023 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM Presenter: Matthew Kuik, PT, DPT; Madeline Lee, PT, DPT, OCS; Bri Molitor PT, DPT, SCS, CSCS The APTA has provided a position statement for direct access to physical therapy services, outlining that “Physical therapists are well qualified, both through formal education and clinical training, to evaluate a patient's condition, assess his or her physical therapy needs and, if appropriate, safely and effectively treat the patient. Physical therapists are also well-qualified to recognize when patients demonstrate conditions, signs and symptoms that should be evaluated by other health care professionals before therapy is instituted.” In 2008, the Minnesota Legislature passed a bill that allowed patients to attend physical therapy for 90 days without a prior diagnosis, with some limitations on which clinicians are allowed to provide these services based on years of clinical experience. As the role of physical therapists as an entry point to care continues to expand within the realm of direct access for musculoskeletal conditions, it is imperative that our clinical knowledge continues to remain up-to-date and robust to appropriately treat, treat and refer, or refer based on findings during a patient evaluation through direct access. Items that are pertinent to this base of knowledge are remaining aware of red flag concerns for non-musculoskeletal pathologies, common medications that patients may be taking and the impact these pharmacotherapies may have on physical therapy interventions, and the importance of vital signs. We will use lecture, patient cases, and small group discussions to accomplish the following: 1. Understanding the role of physical therapists as direct access providers and as a primary entry point to care, within the state of Minnesota. 2. Performing suitable physical therapy evaluation with knowledge of appropriate criteria that establishes the ability to treat in physical therapy or necessitates either an urgent referral or an emergent referral for further care. 3. Developing appropriate clinical decision making within patient case scenarios for optimal patient outcomes. 4. Providing strategies for developing skills to manage patients as direct access providers.
Identifying and Treating Motor Impairment in People with Prodromal-stage Parkinson’s Disease		4/15/2023	4/15/2023	3:00 PM	4:30 PM	4/15/2023 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM Presenter: Colum D. MacKinnon PhD Parkinson’s disease (PD) and other related diseases with alpha-synuclein pathology are associated with a long prodromal or preclinical stage of disease. REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD), a sleep disturbance characterized by muscle activity and dream enactment during REM sleep, is one of the earliest signs of pathology in the nervous system and can precede conversion to overt PD, dementia with Lewy bodies or multiple system atrophy by years to decades. This talk will review the pathophysiology and progression of RBD and the earliest motor and non-signs that predict phenoconversion to PD of a related disorder. Early identification of RBD and detection of subtle motor disturbances provides the opportunity to initiate inventions that have the potential to slow disease progression and maintain optimal motor function and quality of life. A multidisciplinary rehabilitation framework for RBD will be described that is designed for proactive care of people at high risk of conversion to an overt neurodegenerative disorder.
Idiopathic Toe Walking Interventions Based on the Themes of the New Clinical Practice Guidelines		4/15/2023	4/15/2023	3:00 PM	4:30 PM	4/15/2023 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM Presenter: Nicole Hoffman PT, DPT Idiopathic Toe Walking (ITW) is a prevalent diagnosis seen by physical therapists. The American Physical Therapy Association has had an initiative to increase the number of Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG) in order to guide evidence-based physical therapy as well as to encourage future research. As a current member of the guideline development team for the ITW CPG, Nicole Hoffman, DPT will explore the themes of the soon to be published new clinical practice guideline for Idiopathic Toe Walking. These themes will address the evidence-based interventions for a child presenting with Idiopathic Toe Walking from referral through discharge. New data will be shared regarding other system pathway prevalence in patients presenting with Idiopathic Toe Walking. The attendee will also learn pearls for understanding the impaired biomechanics present in children with Idiopathic Toe Walking and treatment ideas to address.
Neuroplasticity in Lower Extremity Rehab; The Knee and your Brain		4/15/2023	4/15/2023	3:00 PM	4:30 PM	4/15/2023 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM Presenter: Cassie Endsley PT, DPT, SCS, CSCS After ligamentous injury, decreased afferent proprioceptive input leads to a cascade of changes in the brain. The high incidence of re-injury rates begs for answers as to why this occurs as well as how and if we can change those outcomes. Traditional rehabilitation may be strengthening these neuroplastic changes that occur, leading to poor strategies for deciphering afferent input to control motor output when returning to sport. This presentation will discuss the neuroplastic changes that occur after injury as well as interventions that can easily be applied in your clinical practice.
Thriving in the Acute Care Environment: Collaboration Between PT, PTAs, and Students		4/15/2023	4/15/2023	3:00 PM	4:30 PM	4/15/2023 3:00 PM - 4:30 PM Presenter: Brian Jonart PT, DPT, NCS This course will provide an evidence-based and practical approach to improve clinical practice effectiveness in acute care physical therapy. It will also focus on ways to improve patient, student and clinician satisfaction in this environment. Considerations regarding student preparation, intra and interprofessional clinical skills, and additional concepts will be discussed. This course strives to provide tools and facilitate a discussion to improve care for all those involved in this dynamic practice setting. Additional implications to the PTA/PT practice guidelines in this setting will be considered. It will balance an evidence-based and informed perspective with innovative ideas to help patients, students, assistants and therapists thrive in acute care.
