Course Description:

This course introduces the physical therapist or physical therapist assistant to care of the pregnant patient. Topics include major hormonal influences and physiologic adaptations to the hormonal shifts. Indications, precautions, and contraindications are discussed with relevance to general and specific conditions. Treatment techniques are demonstrated and described with application of recent literature to support interventions.

Holly Tanner is a 1995 graduate of the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, MN. She is ABPTS certified in Women's Health and in Orthopedics. Holly holds a faculty position with the Herman & Wallace Pelvic Rehabilitation Institute and an adjunct faculty position with the College of St. Scholastica.

Description

The number of outcome measures available to the physical therapist treating clients with neurologic injuries can seem overwhelming. Using resources readily available to therapists, participants will explore a methodology for choosing measures and determine which of those would be best suitable for their clients and the practice area in which they work. Tools that reflect the 3 levels of human function according to the ICF Model will be considered. Time will be allotted for break-out sessions to maximize information-sharing and practice various outcome tools.

Objectives

At the end of this course, participants should be able to:

1. Debate the issues to consider when choosing an outcome tool,
2. Define psychometric properties used in research to identify appropriate tools for the neurologic population, and 
3. Administer outcome measures that assess multiple components of the ICF that would be appropriate for clients with various neurologic injuries.

Course Description

The scope of musculoskeletal injury and dysfunction and injury is non-surgical and can be managed by a cooperative PT and physician team working together to reduce pain and improve function. This partnership requires a trust relationship that has not been fostered in medical training and must become a regular part of our curricula and practice strategies. The are many examples of unnecessary surgery and diagnostic imaging that can potentially be avoided with the use of cooperative patient care that recognizes the training, skills and limitations of health care disciplines. The strengths of the physical therapist in musculoskeletal exam and manual therapy can be exploited to improve the outcomes, care efficiency, and costs in patient care. This joint presentation will demonstrate a working relationship that advances the concepts outlined above.

Speaker Biography

Dr. Roberts a Professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Minnesota Medical School and Program Director at University of Minnesota St Johns Family Medicine Residency in St Paul, MN. His special medical interests are in sports medicine and he has a sub-specialty certificate in Sports Medicine, is a Fellow, Past President, and Past Foundation President of the American College of Sports Medicine; a charter member of the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine; a founding member and past President of the International Institute of Race Medicine; Editor in Chief for Current Sports Medicine Reports; an Editorial Board Member of Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, British Journal of Sports Medicine, and Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine; the Medical Director for the Twin Cities Marathon; the Chair of the Sports Medicine Advisory Committee for the Minnesota State High School League; and a member of the USA Soccer Cup Tournament Sports Medicine Advisory Committee. His research is in ice hockey and marathon related illness and injury. He has authored many research and educational publications in sports medicine, and has presented nationally and internationally on sports medicine topics.

Kelly Roberts Lane, DPT, received herDoctorate of Physical Therapy from the College of St. Catherine in 2006. She now owns and operates Fix It physical therapy in Mahtomedi Minnesota where she treats all ages and abilities. She specializes in manual therapy skills to facilitated full movement, allowing everyone a chance to participate in all of life's activities.

Course Description 

This two hour session is designed to have panel members share their experiences in developing, implementing and evaluating the effectiveness of providing collaborative medical and school-based physical therapy services for children and their families. The important role that pediatric physical therapists play in both of these settings will be reviewed in light of current clinical reasoning models, program rules and regulations, payor expectations and child/family needs. Audience members will be encouraged to be active participants by engaging panel members in an open dialogue regarding their own unique experiences, challenges, questions, and successes as we seek to develop collaborative medical and school-based physical therapy models for children and their families in Minnesota.

Speaker Biography

David Chapman currently serves as a professor in the physical therapy program at St. Catherine University. His primary responsibilities include teaching course content in the areas of pediatrics and neuro-rehabilitation. Dr. Chapman's research interests include the effect of context on the acquisition of new motor skills in infants with neuromuscular disabilities and how physical therapy students develop confidence in their professional knowledge. He also serves on the DPT Program's Admission's Committee, St. Catherine University's Institutional Review Board, and works to enhance the Service Learning opportunities provided to physical therapy students.

This course is intended to bridge the gap between average therapy for the shoulder and exceptional therapy. We start with a strong base of knowledge of anatomy and biomechanics of the shoulder and how that relates to specific shoulder pathology. Throughout the course we will review current literature for promoting evidenced based practice. We will finish with how to progress the overhead athlete from injury to an appropriate return to sport.

Keely Behning has worked as a Physical Therapist in Minnesota for over 10 years focused in Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. She completed an APTA credentialed Sports Physical Therapy Residency with Minnesota Sports Medicine in 2007. She is a Board Certified Clinical Specialist in Sports Physical Therapy. Keely works as a Physical Therapist at Viverant and treats patients with shoulder pathology as well as overhead athletes regularly.
