Health Behavior Coaching Skills for Physical Therapists		4/24/2015	4/24/2015	8:00 AM	12:00 PM	4/24/2015 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM Health Behavior Coaching Skills for Physical Therapists This course is available to PT's ONLY, is free for members, and is limited to 50 participants. Speakers: Janet R Bezner, PT, DPT, PhD; Beth Black, PT, DSc; and MarySue Ingman, PT, DSc Contact Hours: 3.75 MN BPT Cat. 1 CEUs Course Description The primary outcomes of this course will be that the physical therapists will be able to assess patient/client behavior, recognize when it is appropriate to address changes in their patient/client health behaviors, and most importantly be able to effectively and respectively coach their patient/client in successfully making permanent health behavior changes. We will provide physical therapists with the skills and practice to be able to partner with the patient/client to develop an effective and sustainable behavior change program. Factors that impact behavior change (self-efficacy, values, barriers, knowledge, etc) will be covered along with the principles of Motivational Interviewing and the application of the 5 A’s and 5 R's in a coaching session. Participants will be able to volunteer to serve as a mentor to facilitate the coaching skills in other PTs. Course Objectives Upon completion of this course, participants will: Explain the importance of health promotion and wellness initiatives and the role of physical therapists in health promotion. Describe key modifiable personal health behaviors that physical therapists could address with their patients/clients. Describe and understand the application of the 5A’s and the 5R’s. Describe the principles and key constructs of motivational interviewing. Recognize and be able to assess various personal and environmental factors that impact behavior change (self-efficacy, values, barriers, knowledge, etc.) in the context of a health coaching encounter. Demonstrate the ability to apply motivational interviewing within a case study and practice with patients/clients. Demonstrate the ability to use the 5A’s and 5R’s within a case study and with patients/clients. Recognize the need to refer a patient/client to another provider or resource when their needs exceed the capability or scope of practice of the physical therapist. Consider identifying self as a mentor to facilitate the development of health coaching skills in other physical therapists. Speaker Biographies Dr Bezner, PT, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Therapy at Texas State University. Bezner teaches, conducts research on physical activity and provides service to the university community. She received her bachelor’s degree in physical therapy at the University of Texas Medical Branch, her master’s degree from Texas Woman’s University, degree PhD in health education from the University of Texas and a DPT degree from Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions. Prior to joining Texas State in August 2014, she was Vice President of Education, Governance and Administration at the American Physical Therapy Association and prior to that, senior vice president for PeakCare, Inc, a health care technology firm, where she managed the development of a wellness and prevention software and video library aimed at employers to assist in decreasing health care costs associated with illness and injury at work. Bezner has practiced in a variety of health care settings, including hospitals, home health, long-term care and corporate wellness. Bezner served on APTA’s Board of Directors prior to joining its staff and is a recipient of the Lucy Blair Service Award. Bezner is a graduate of the 2009 Leadership Alexandria program and has completed a national training summit on physical activity. She is an experienced speaker and facilitator on topics related to leadership, personal development, strategic planning, and health promotion and wellness. Dr. Black is an Assistant Professor in the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at Oakland University in Rochester Michigan. She received a Doctor of Science degree in Health Promotion and Wellness from Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions in 2010. Her research and clinical interest is in the area of the physical therapist’s role in health promotion and wellness, with a particular focus on the use of motivational interviewing and health promotion interventions for individuals with chronic disease and disability. She has published a number of articles and a text chapter on health promotion and was a speaker for the APTA Advanced Clinical Practice series on Health and Wellness. Black recently received funding from the APTA Health Policy and Administration Section to carry out a study to examine the potential benefit of using Fitbit technology and health coaching to support increased daily physical activity in individuals with multiple sclerosis. MarySue Ingman is Associate Professor in the Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at St Catherine University in Minneapolis, MN. Her physical therapy Bachelor’s Degree as well as her Master of Science Degree is from the University of Minnesota. She received her Doctor of Science degree in Health Promotion and Wellness from Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions in 2011. Her research interests include the relationship of physical activity and quality of life in patients who have had bariatric surgery as well as the role of physical therapists in health promotion in clinical practice. She has taught courses in on Health and Wellness since 2006 at the University of Kentucky, New Mexico APTA, Minnesota APTA and the APTA Advanced Clinical Practice Health and Wellness.

Understanding how abnormal limb function can contribute to the mechanisms of specific joint dysfunction is essential for the evaluation and treatment of common orthopaedic disorders. This evidence-based course will review the anatomy and mechanics of the lower kinetic chain, particularly in relation to specific pathologies of the ankle, knee and hip. Emphasis will be placed on current research findings in the areas of gait analysis, lower limb function, and joint biomechanics. Implications for the evaluation and treatment of various musculoskeletal conditions will be addressed. Course Objectives Upon completion of this course, participants will: Describe the normal anatomy and biomechanics of the foot/ankle, knee and hip Describe the normal joint kinematics, kinetics and muscle actions during walking and running Describe the normal interaction of the hip, knee, ankle and foot during walking and running Compare and contrast the biomechanical differences among the various running styles (heel strike, midfoot strike, forefoot strike) Describe the influence of footwear on running mechanics Describe the current research literature related to the mechanisms of lower extremity injury Plan appropriate treatment interventions based on a biomechanical assessment of the lower extremity Speaker Biography Dr. Powers' research and teaching interests relate to the biomechanical aspects of human movement. More specifically, his research focuses on how altered kinematics, kinetics, and muscular actions contribute to lower extremity injury. He is particularly interested in the pathomechanics underlying knee and patellofemoral joint dysfunction. He is currently the Co-Director of the Musculoskeletal Biomechanics Research Laboratory and the Director of the Program in Biokinesiology at USC. Dr. Powers is recognized nationally and internationally for his research related to the biomechanical causes of lower extremity injury. More specifically, he is considered one of the world’s leading authorities on knee injuries; in particular patellofemoral joint dysfunction and tears of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Dr. Powers has published over 130 research articles and has received several awards from the American Physical Therapy Association, including the Rose Excellence in Research Award from the Orthopaedic Section, the Eugene Michels New Investigator Award, the Dorothy Briggs Scientific Inquiry Award and the Helen J Hislop Award for contributions to the professional literature. Dr. Powers is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and a Catherine Worthingham Fellow of the American Physical Therapy Association. He also is a member of the American Society for Biomechanics, American Society for Testing and Measures, and the North American Society for Gait and Clinical Movement Analysis. In addition, Dr. Powers is Editor of the Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy.

Health Care Reform and the ACA today – New Payment Models		4/24/2015	4/24/2015	1:00 PM	5:00 PM	4/24/2015 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM Health Care Reform and the ACA today – New Payment Models Speakers: Kathleen Picard, PT; Craig Johnson, PT, MBA; and Jim Hoyme, PT, MBA Contact Hours: 3.75 MN BPT Cat. 1 CEUs Course Description The first part of this course takes a look at the Affordable Care Act (ACA) from the consumer and the payer perspective as well as from the provider (PT) perspective. It takes a look back at the history of health insurance in the United States and outlines the socio-political influences on health care policy. It introduces the participants to the ACA and distills the law into the key components that have been rolled out over the past five years. The course ends with a discussion of the opportunities the ACA offers to physical therapy professionals. Next, the course will examine how health care changes are affecting the way we deliver physical therapy services. Along with new delivery of care models are new payment models. Payment impacts the care our patients receive, and affects provider behavior. This course will lay a foundation to understand third party payment models, and the migration from traditional models to new models of payment for therapy services. Payment is shifting from a volume to a value basis, which has impacts on providers behaviors. Various new models will be described and the potential impact on physical therapy services. Course Objectives Upon completion of this course, participants will: Understand the history of health insurance in the US Appreciate the socio-political influences on health care policy Analyze the key elements of the ACA and their impact on the profession of physical therapy Understand payment concepts and principles Understand the shift from volume to value based system of payment in health care reform Understand the potential impact of new models of payment on the delivery of care Speaker Biographies Kathleen Picard currently owns an independent consulting practice, providing support and assistance to physical therapists in the areas of payment policy and practice management. She is also an associate faculty member at the University of MN Program in Physical Therapy where she teaches business administration, health care policy, coding, reimbursement and ethics. Her clinical practice experience includes acute care, long term care, home care, and private practice sports and orthopedics. Kathleen is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Program in Physical Therapy. Kathleen has served in many roles within the APTA and currently chairs MNPTA’s State Government Affairs Committee and is a member of the Government Affairs Committee for the Private Practice Section. She is an appointed representative for the physical therapy profession in advisory roles to Medicare, MN Medical Assistance, and the AMA’s CPT Editorial Panel. Craig Johnson is a Partner and the Director of Clinical Integration at Therapy Partners, where he has led provider pilots with payers that have demonstrated the effect of outcomes on total episode cost. He is the current President of MNPTA, active in government affairs, payer relations. He initiated a strategic repositioning effort of the chapter, payer forums, and payer relation meetings during his tenure as President. He has spoken numerous times at APTA-CSM and APTA National conferences on the subject of outcomes, innovative models of care, and the relationship of total episode cost to outcomes. He was selected to present at the APTA Innovation Summit, in 2013 and presented on two proposals at the APTA Innovation 2.0 in 2014. He has been involved in private practice and management for over 30 years. He graduated from the physical therapy program at the University of MN in 1979, and his MBA is from the University of St. Thomas in 2000.
Screening Senior Games Athletes with the Senior Athlete Fitness Exam		4/24/2015	4/24/2015	1:00 PM	5:00 PM	4/24/2015 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM Screening Senior Games Athletes with the Senior Athlete Fitness Exam Speaker: Becca Jordre, PT, DPT, GCS, CEEAA, Cert MDT Contact Hours: 3.75 MN BPT Cat. 1 CEUs Course Description The National Senior Games Association (NSGA) regularly holds events for individuals over the age of 50 at both the state and national level. Their main aim is to promote health and fitness for older adults. As physical therapists, our vision and goals could not be more appropriately aligned with this organization. We continually look for strategies to prevent injury and keep our population moving. And while we often think of young athletes in this regard, our ever-growing older adult population needs our direct attention. The athletes involved in the NSGA are eager to maintain their health and mobility as they age. With this motivation, physical therapists have a perfect opportunity to identify limitations, provide education and refer participants to appropriate providers. In doing so, we may keep our healthy older athletes in the game. This session will present the Senior Athlete Fitness Exam (SAFE) a screen created by Dr. Jordre with an emphasis on cardiovascular risk factors, strength, flexibility and balance. It is currently being conducted at both the state and national level through a formal agreement with the NSGA. All aspects of the SAFE will be presented and practiced. Information will be provided on screen implementation locally and nationally. National Senior Games competition with more than 10,000 athletes will be held in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area this summer July 3-15, 2015. Participants of this course will learn how they can become involved in the screening of these amazing athletes this summer and for years to come. Course Objectives Upon completion of this course, participants will: Report increased awareness of the NSGA, its goals and organizational structure Discuss the benefits of physical therapist involvement in NSGA events List the components of the screen and discuss why they were chosen for inclusion Demonstrate all components of the screen accurately Report comfort incorporating the screen into physical therapy student service-based learning Report awareness of the ongoing research efforts to improve the screen and how they can become involved Speaker Biography Becca Jordre is an Associate Professor of Physical Therapy at The University of South Dakota where she teaches Geriatric Physical Therapy, Musculoskeletal Physical Therapy and Differential Diagnosis. She started screening senior athletes in South Dakota in 2009 and progressed to screening at the national level in 2011. She also sees patients in Vermillion, SD at Great Plains Therapy.

As current best evidence practices suggest, a multimodal management strategy, including manual physical therapy and exercise. In addition, this course will provide the clinician with the methodological framework for RI, and the essential hands on tools to effectively treat using this model. Presenters will also discuss best evidence with case presentations, in which a RI treatment model has been utilized. Course Objectives Upon completion of this course, participants will: Understand the concepts and principles of Regional Interdependence (RI) relative to musculoskeletal conditions. Describe several musculoskeletal conditions for which a RI treatment approach can be used. Identify selected Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy techniques used in the RI literature. Understand the role of RI in the clinical decision making process for selected upper and lower body conditions. Speaker Biographies Dr. Vraa graduated from University Wisconsin-Lacrosse in 1994 with his Bachelors of Science in Exercise Science, and earned his Masters of Physical Therapy from Carroll University in Waukesha, Wisconsin in 1999. In 2012, he completed his transitional Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Regis University in Denver, CO. Derek has spent the last nine years working for Physical Therapy Orthopaedic Specialists, Inc. (PTOSI), an outpatient orthopedic private practice in Plymouth, Minnesota, that focuses in manual therapy interventions for complex musculoskeletal conditions. Prior to that, he worked in outpatient clinics in western Wisconsin and Forest Lake, Minnesota. In 2007, Derek earned his ABPTS certification (OCS) and is also a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS). Recently, Dr. Vraa completed his Fellowship in Manual Therapy through Regis University in Denver, CO. In addition, he is an adjunct faculty member for Concordia University Doctor of Physical Therapy program in St. Paul, MN. Derek is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association, (APTA) the Orthopaedic Section of the American Physical Therapy Association, the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Therapists (AAOMPT). Mary Beth Geiser PT, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT has been a practicing physical therapist for over 24 years specializing in orthopedics, sports medicine, spine rehabilitation and chronic pain where she maintains a referral-only caseload and works 30 hours/week in direct patient care. Dr. Geiser has over 18 years of experience teaching graduate level physical therapy coursework over a variety of content (Upper and Lower Extremity Musculoskeletal Disorders, Spinal Biomechanics, Spinal Manipulation, Advanced Anatomy, Kinesiology, Exercise Physiology, Radiology, Pain Management and Electrotherapy). She presently holds active adjunct faculty positions at both Concordia University Wisconsin and Marquette University and previously instructed classes for University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Physical Therapy Program. She has received several advanced credentials (OCS credentials in 1999 & 2009; DPT in 2008; and Fellowship credentials in 2014) and was inducted into the prestigious Alpha Sigma Nu Honors Society (Regis University Chapter) in 2013. Dr. Geiser has 5 published abstracts, numerous non-peer reviewed articles and has lectured at a several local and national conferences (Wisconsin, Iowa, Rhode Island and Connecticut PT Associations, Medical College of Wisconsin, APTA Combined Sections Meeting and AAOMPT Annual Conference). Matthew Vraa, PT, DPT, MBA, OCS, CMTPT is the Director of Clinical Education at Concordia University – St. Paul Doctor of Physical Therapy Program. He has worked alongside of interventional and non-interventional physicians in their practice locations focusing on medically complex chronic musculoskeletal pain to help facilitate diagnostics and expedite optimum outcomes through coordination of care. Practicing alongside of physician and midlevel providers for the last eleven years provides him a unique understanding and knowledge of collaborating between providers. Dr. Vraa uses a collective of manual therapy techniques in his treatment approach including HVLA, MET, Dry Needling, MFR, Neuromuscular Reeducation, PNF and other complementary techniques in working with his patients with chronic pain. Matthew earned his Master’s in Physical Therapy from Carroll College in Waukesha, Wisconsin in 2002, and his Master’s in Business Administration with a Healthcare Finance emphasis in 2009 from Argosy University. He completed his Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Regis University in Denver, Colorado in 2012. Matthew’s past education is in a wide variety of manual therapy, therapeutic exercise, and cognitive behavioral approaches to treat chronic pain. He has also finished the Regis University Manual Therapy Fellowship program and pursuing his PhD in Physical Therapy with Nova Southeastern University.

Tripp, DPT and Kimberly Lambert, PT Contact Hours: 2 MN BPT Cat. 1 CEUs Course Description This course will focus on completed and impending pathologic fractures in patients with metastatic cancer, multiple myeloma and lymphoma. Medical management, including diagnosis, imaging and medical interventions will be discussed. In addition, associated evidence of pathologic fractures and the roles of various medical team members will be explained. Objectives also include strategies for chart reviewing and identifying patients at risk for and those with pathologic fractures. Current evidence will be reviewed as well as with guidelines for clinical decision-making in regards to modifying physical therapy, occupational therapy, and exercise interventions. There will be small group discussions comparing current practice with optimal management of pathological fracture, followed by case studies. Course Objectives Upon completion of this course, participants will: Recognize clinical presentation of pathologic fractures Discuss basics of medical management of pathologic fractures Identify the roles of medical & therapy team members Perform effective chart reviewing for bone metastases Modify therapy sessions for bone metastases Apply above information to case discussions Speaker Biographies Linda M. Tripp graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College with a BA in Biology and Spanish in 2002. She completed her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from the College of St. Catherine in 2007. Since then, she has been working with inpatient adults at the University of Minnesota Medical Center, East Bank. Linda is the editor of our blood and marrow transplant training manual. She has been involved in developing a therapy program for patients with Blood and Marrow Transplants and presented on this topic with Eva Gold at CSM 2010. Kim Lambert graduated from Luther College with a BA in Biology and a minor in Spanish in 2006. She completed her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree at the Mayo School of Health Sciences in 2013. Since beginning to work with inpatient adults at the University of Minnesota Medical Center, East Bank she has worked primarily with medical oncology and organ transplant populations.

Participants will gain an understanding of various biopsychosocial pain models, and recognize multiple physical and biopsychosocial factors which influence low back pain. Differences between treatment mediators, treatment moderators, and prognostic factors will be reviewed. Methods used to measure meaningful changes in biopsychosocial factors will be identified. Physical therapy management of low back pain within a biopsychosocial framework, including the role of health care provider beliefs will be discussed. Course Objectives Upon completion of this course, participants will: Recognize contributions of yellow flags, green flags, black flags, and blue flags in effective management of low back pain. Understand differences between treatment mediators, treatment moderators, and prognostic factors. Synthesize different biopsychosocial pain models and outline challenges with the biomedical pain relief model. Recognize the role of fear, catastrophizing, depression, self-efficacy in low back pain and methods used to measure meaningful change. Demonstrate understanding of the fear-avoidance model including the important role of health care provider beliefs. Assimilate strategies to address biopsychosocial factors to enhance therapeutic efficacy. Speaker Biography Darren Calley is the Outpatient Clinical Education Coordinator and the Physical Therapy Orthopaedic Residency Coordinator at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. In these roles, he has been the primary clinical instructor to over 150 physical therapy students and coordinator of 4 physical therapy residents. Darren earned a DScPT degree through the University of Maryland, is an Assistant Professor of Physical Therapy in the College of Medicine at Mayo Clinic, and is a board certified specialist in orthopaedics. He has served on the Nominating Committee for the Minnesota APTA, and has publications in JOSPT, the Clinical Journal of Pain, Orthopaedic Practice, and Journal of Allied Health. Darren has presented at national, state, and regional levels on clinical education, and helped organize and create the clinical and didactic curriculum utilized in the Mayo Clinic Physical Therapy Orthopaedic Residency which began in 2013.

Lahn, PT, DPT, PhD Contact Hours: 2 MN BPT Cat. 1 CEUs Course Description Both medical and PT researchers are urgently calling for more understanding of the clinician/patient relationship, which “has the potential to dramatically improve therapeutic effects” (Fuentes et al. 2014). This interactive, experiential course will explore possible mechanisms behind the therapeutic alliance and its implications for patient outcomes and clinician well-being. Participants will be introduced to the neurobiology of prosocial emotion, a critical component of the alliance. The presenter will share original research in prosocial emotion and stress resilience training for therapists, and how self-care may relate to the alliance. Finally, participants will learn practical, simple self-care techniques that can enhance their own well-being and their practice. The factors that contribute to a strong therapeutic alliance can reduce costs, improve patient care, and improve quality of life for us as therapists. Clinicians in any practice area, educators, and students are all welcome to attend! Lahn, PT, DPT, PhD has been a clinician for16 years, specializing in headache and chronic pain disorders. She co-founded Park Nicollet’s Integrative Medicine program, has presented on mind-body medicine for therapists, and has designed and conducted patient and staff training programs on self-care and stress resiliency. Her PhD studies focused on change leadership in the healthcare system and the science and practice of mind-body medicine. She has presented at national conferences about her research findings in the study of neurocardiology and the psychophysiological outcomes of clinician stress resilience training. She is currently a clinical specialist with the Minneapolis VA Medical Center, where she is collaborating with an interdisciplinary team to develop CARF-accredited pain rehabilitation programming.

Culturally rooted in Eastern philosophy, mindfulness has been translated into Western healthcare to address issues such as stress, chronic pain and illness, depression and anxiety, as well as health promotion and high-level wellness. Meditation is central to the practice of mindfulness; the method is readily accessible with ongoing practice providing the challenge. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (National Institutes of Health) classifies mindfulness meditation as a mind/body practice, and defines it as “a type of meditation that involves completely focusing on experiences on a moment-to-moment basis.” In this presentation we will explore mindfulness as medicine to include key concepts, history in the United States, benefits for both physical therapists and patients, ongoing research, and resources for further study. Throughout our time together we will pause to experience mindfulness meditation exercises. We will dialog about the challenges facing physical therapists and how mindfulness may serve as a tool to support therapists and patients in their goals for health and healing. Come share your prior experience with mindfulness meditation or be introduced to the concept for the first time. Discuss the benefits of mindfulness meditation on a physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual level. Speaker Biography Janet Marinelli, M.S. in Physical Therapy from the University of Minnesota, is an educator who works as Assistant Professor in the Master of Arts in Holistic Health Studies Program at St. Catherine University where she teaches courses in Foundations of Holistic Health and Wellness, Energy Healing, Spiritual Wellness, and Creative Arts and the Healing Journey. In l984 Janet led the development of the first certificate program in holistic health at St. Mary’s Junior College, now the Minneapolis Campus, St. Catherine University, and served on the creative team for the Master of Arts in Holistic Health Studies Program which opened in 2004. Grateful for her grounding in the field of physical therapy and the power of the mind-body-spirit connection, Janet continues to look towards the leading edge in health, healing, and transformative learning. This course is intended to help providers be more confident in using the available research and resources to select outcome measures for their practice. Findings from select APTA Neurology and Oncology Section EDGE task forces will be reviewed along with a clinical example of a standardized assessment battery for stroke. Course Objectives Upon completion of this course, participants will: Describe necessary psychometric properties needed for useful physical therapy outcome measures. Apply knowledge of psychometric properties to the evaluation process of an outcome measure. Identify resources that can help inform outcome measure selection in various practice areas including those provided by the APTA. Provide a clinical example of outcome measure evaluation and selection. Speaker Biographies Jennifer Sherman, PT, DPT, NCS is a physical therapist with the Courage Kenny Rehabilitation Institute at United Hospital, part of Allina Health. She received her Master and Doctor of Physical Therapy degrees from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 2002 and 2005 respectively. Jen is Board Certified in Neurologic Physical Therapy. She is an Acute Care and Neurology section member of the American Physical Therapy Association and co-chair of the Research Committee for the Minnesota Chapter. Laura Gilchrist PT, PhD is a Professor of Physical Therapy at St. Catherine University and a Clinical Research Scientist at Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of MN. Her research focuses on cancer-related impairments of the neuromuscular systems. She has headed up the EDGE task force for measurement of outcomes in breast cancer and coordinates the efforts for production of evidence-based documents for the oncology section of the APTA.

She has served as medical director for men and women’s intercollegiate athletics at the University of Minnesota for 30 years, and continues as a team physician for select female sports. She is also a nationally recognized speaker on knee conditions with an emphasis on those that are more frequent in females in particular ACL injuries and patellofemoral concerns. In addition to her university responsibilities, she represented the University of Minnesota and the Big Ten Conference on the NCAA Safeguards Committee for 6 years 1990-1996. She was on the President’s Council for physical fitness in sport 1992-2000. She was also head team physician for Women’s USA Hockey for the World Games in 1992 and 1994. She has served on the faculty of several Advanced Team Physician courses. She continues to be a strong advocate for sport safety, and establishment of more evidence based criteria for return to sports after knee injury/surgery.

Derek Vraa has been in clinical practice for 16 years and currently works for Physical Therapy Orthopaedic Specialists, Inc. in Plymouth, MN. He has guest lectured at physical therapy schools in Minnesota and Wisconsin, and is an adjunct faculty member for Concordia University Doctor of Physical Therapy program in St. Paul, MN. Dr. Vraa is a board certified orthopedic clinical specialist, a certified strength and conditioning specialist, and completed his Fellowship in Manual Therapy through Regis University in Denver, CO. In addition, Derek has presented at national conferences and mentors student physical therapist through the Orthopaedic Section of the APTA. Joel DeMaris, DPT graduated from Regis University in 2009. The practical exercises (tools) offer a direct experience of the interconnection of mind, body and emotions, and a way to shift out of a habit into a neutral state, gaining perspective and choice. Case examples of this body-based, whole person approach to healing in physical therapy will be provided. The examples include outcomes and illustrate the use of various approaches and a range of tools taught to patient’s to empower their inner wisdom and healing. Networking, referral practices to allopathic practitioners (including physical therapists), and practitioners from other traditions will be discussed. The importance of self-care in consistency of treatment, and the health of practitioner and patient is a key component. Margaret will share her journey from orthopedic physical therapy to a practice holding the two paradigms of physical therapy, or allopathic medicine, and that of transpersonal psychology and energy medicine, based in the science of the wisdom traditions. The tools and discussion will demonstrate how these two paradigms are operational in all of us, and how we can all co-operate with this process of healing and growth toward wholeness, bringing increased effectiveness in life and work, without necessarily changing anything but our perspective. Course Objectives Upon completion of this course, participants will: An awareness of how the body is influenced by and influences the more subtle aspects of our being - feelings, thoughts and spiritual nature, and how we can easily make subtle but powerful, and measurable (subjective, and objective) changes in all of these. Speaker Biography Margaret (Peg) McRaith MA, PT, graduated from the University of Minnesota in Physical Therapy in 1971. She worked in various settings, including initiating and building an orthopedic physical therapy practice, from 1979 to 1986. She received her MA from St. Mary’s University in 1988, studying the mind-body connection in healing, and has had a full-time integrative physical therapy practice since 1988. Margaret taught Physical Therapy at St. Mary’s, was a trainer for the Psychosynthesis (a transpersonal psychology) Institute of Minnesota for 12 years, and taught a form of energy healing based on the science of the universal wisdom traditions, throughout the world, from 1993 to 2006. She was the “body person” among psychologists and social workers in Psychosynthesis. There, she taught Imagery in Healing to a wide range of professionals. In that work, as well as studies with various figures such as Rachel Naomi Remen, MD and Angeles Arrien, Phd, she learned leadership and group facilitation. Margaret has been on the faculty of the Center for Spirituality and Healing since 1998, and is currently on the Integrative Advisory Board at Pathways health crisis resource center. Margaret currently practices physical therapy through Integrative Therapy Services, Inc, and wellness through Simply Body Wise (R). Through Simply Body Wise (R), she consults with organizations, and trains individuals interested in growing toward wholeness, and professionals wishing to expand their capacity to assess and treat the whole person. Her professional and personal passion is studying and teaching the science of the body as a portal to the whole person and a grounded, practical way toward healing and wholeness.

Recent advances in the development of programs designed to target specific deficits are being utilized to teach athletes safe ways to jump, cut, and pivot to allow decrease risk of re-injury. We will discuss some of the progressions of these neuromuscular control exercises, from “standard” post op phases through high level return to sport testing. We will conclude by presenting some clinical research on our post op ACL population and the quantitative improvements in hop testing following completion of our program. Lecture material will be supplemented with clinical patient videos. This session will actively engage participants in an Oxford-style debate to discuss this issue. This course is intended for physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, physical therapy students, and physical therapist assistant students. Course Objectives Upon completion of this course, participants will: Explain how our PT professional ethics direct us toward person-centered care. Discuss how our PT professional ethics play a role in deciding whether and how we adapt our delivery of physical therapy to accommodate our diverse patients’ expectations.
