Beyond the Technique: Strengthening the Clinical Reasoning Behind Thrust Manipulation		4/22/2016	4/22/2016	8:00 AM	5:00 PM	4/22/2016 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM Beyond the Technique: Strengthening the Clinical Reasoning Behind Thrust Manipulation Speakers: Bill Koch PT, DPT, OCS, Cert MDT, FAAOMPT and Chris Kramer PT, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT Contact Hours: 7.5 Course Description Have you ever attended a CE course and left with many new techniques/interventions but were still unsure how/when to utilize them within your clinical practice? Did you ever wonder which technique is most appropriate for which patient? Or when in the episode of care you might start or stop using a given intervention? Or how many different techniques to use on one patient in one session? Or which techniques to best use for each condition? These are common questions that arise within the clinical reasoning framework of a physical therapist and are critical to address when integrating new skills into one’s clinical practice. This course will use a unique format to instruct in the evidence and motor skill related to thrust manipulation for the spine and extremities, with a primary focus on the clinical reasoning related to the use of these in clinical practice. Using actual clinical cases, we will walk through the clinical reasoning surrounding the use of the skills covered in the session. We will deconstruct the clinical reasoning process related to the when, who, how and why for each of the techniques covered within different body regions. Course Objectives Acquire requisite clinical reasoning skills related to the use of thrust manipulation in clinical practice. Acquire motor skills related to the performance of thrust manipulation techniques in the spine and extremities. Establish an evidence base related to use of thrust manipulation in clinical practice. Speaker Biographies Dr. Koch is a graduate of Marquette University in Milwaukee, WI where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminology and Law Studies (1999) followed by a Masters degree in Physical Therapy (2001). He is Credentialed in Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy through the McKenzie Institute International (2006), is board certified in Orthopedic Physical Therapy (2008) and completed the transitional DPT from Regis University in Denver, CO (2009). He recently completed a Manual Physical Therapy fellowship through Regis University and is a member of the APTA and AAOMPT. He practices for Park Nicollet Clinic in Wayzata. Dr. Kramer graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor’s of Science in Kinesiology and went on to earn a Masters of Science in Physical Therapy. In 2008, he became board certified in orthopedic physical therapy. In 2009, Dr. Kramer graduated from Regis University with his transitional DPT. Most recently he became a Fellow, graduating in 2011 from Regis University’s Manual Therapy Fellowship program. He is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association and the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapists. He currently works at Park Nicollet in Minneapolis.
Development of Manual Therapy Skills to Enhance Geriatric Patient Intervention		4/22/2016	4/23/2016	8:00 AM	5:00 PM	4/22/2016 8:00 AM - 4/23/2016 5:00 PM Development of Manual Therapy Skills to Enhance Geriatric Patient Intervention Speaker: Carleen Lindsey, PT, MScAH, GCS, CEEAA Contact Hours: 13 Course Description This two day course is designed to give a practical approach to manual therapy interventions for the geriatric patient. Geriatric patients can present with a variety of restrictions and benefit from a variety of manual therapy interventions. This course will include reviews of the aging process and soft tissue mechanics as well as assessment approaches for tissue flexibility and trunk muscle strength. The personal mechanical health of the individual participant will also be addressed throughout the course. The lab portion will feature how to perform flexible curve kypholordosis measurements, joint mobilizations for the shoulder, hip, foot and ankle as well as tender point releases, contract-relax and passive physiological intervertebral mobilizations and muscle energy techniques for spinal, rib and SIJ dysfunctions. The course will incorporate video, slide, and class member examples for specific clinical problem solving. These case studies will assist the clinician in developing an overall treatment approach by appropriately combining tissue and postural assessment tools, manual therapy techniques, and exercise programs. This course has been designed for the clinician to immediately apply the information in the clinical setting. This is a clinically comprehensive “hands on” workshop. Supplies Recommended for Participation Goniometer with 0.1 cm markings, a tape measure, a mobilization belt or luggage strap, and a Westcott LetterCraft 24-Inch Flexible Curve (TC-382) (TC-382). Be sure to get this type of flexible curve: 24 inch “square” (non-graduated, non-calibrated). Course Objectives Describe the aging process as it relates to musculoskeletal and soft tissue mechanics Apply the sequencing concept for evaluation and treatment of mechanical impairments focusing on muscle imbalance, spinal and peripheral mal-alignments, and gait dysfunction Utilize the flexible curve for accurate measurement of kypholordosis Perform simple shoulder, hip and foot/ankle mobilization techniques Treat kyphosis utilizing passive physiological intervertebral thoracic mobilization Combine manual therapy with contract-relax to treat patients with kyphosis/forward head, protracted shoulders and limited gleno-humeral capsule mobility Apply tender point release soft tissue treatment for patients with pain and loss of mobility Apply muscle energy techniques for treatment of thoracic, lumbar, rib, and SIJ torsion dysfunctions Speaker Biography Ms. Lindsey has degrees in Physical Education and Physical Therapy from the University of California, and an advanced musculoskeletal Master’s in Allied Health from the University of Connecticut. She is a board-certified Geriatric Specialist, and an APTA Section on Geriatrics Certified Exercise Expert for Aging Adults. She treats an outpatient and homecare caseload composed of musculoskeletal, osteoporo-sis, balance, and women’s health patients of all ages at Bristol Physical Therapy, LLC in Bristol, CT. She also has many years of experience treating patients in university, student health, ECF, SNF, acute inpatient and senior day care settings. She teaches continuing education courses to health professionals nationally and also as adjunct instructor in the Physical Therapy program at the University of Connecticut. Her continuing education is extensive in biomechanics, geriatrics, manual therapy, PNF, and many other areas of physical therapy expertise. She has participated in research and publications on osteoporosis and balance, authored an instructional video on flexible curve kypholordosis measurement technique, produced three patient home exercise videos, and presented numerous lectures and courses to professional and lay audiences locally and nationally over the past 35 years. She was the primary developer of the UCHC Rehab Services Osteoporosis Prevention Program. Ms Lindsey has also written chapters for two major Geriatric Rehabilitation text books, and co-authored an osteoporosis home study module for the APTA Section on Women's Health. Carleen is currently part of the APTA task force for creation of Clinical Practice Guidelines for osteoporosis. She has been co-chair for the National Osteoporo¬sis Founda¬tion's Committee on Continuing Educa¬tion for Physical Therapists, and for the APTA Academy on Geriatric PT Balance and Falls Special Interest Group. She has also held many service positions for the AGPT Bone Health SIG. She is a member of the APTA Geriatric, Women's Health, Orthopaedic, and Private Practice Sections, and also the Connecti¬cut chapter Manual Therapy SIG. She was the 1999 winner of the APTA AGPT Lynn Phillippi Advocacy for Older Adults Award, received the U Conn Allied Health Research Award for Excellence in 2001, and the 2008 APTA AGPT President’s Award for Outstanding Service.

Jody has more than eight years of executive management experience, including her role as an active member of the boards for the Minnesota Systems Review Board (MSRB) and Therapy Partners, Inc. (TPI). She also co-authored an article titled, “Build a High-Performance Team,” which appeared in the September 2010 issue of IMPACT. She completed her PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Minnesota in 2004, with a focus in shoulder biomechanics and quantitative research methods starting an academic career at The College of St. Scholastica in 2002. Currently, she is teaching in both the transitional and traditional Doctorate of Physical Therapy Programs at the College of St. Scholastica primarily in the areas of biomechanics, musculoskeletal rehabilitation and evidence based practice. She has been a long-term reviewer for JOSPT and a board exam writer for FSBPT with passion for sharing evidence based practice. Her primary research interests lie within orthopedic lower extremity biomechanics. Beth Cloud, PT, DPT, PhD completed her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree at the Mayo School of Health Sciences. She then pursued a PhD in Clinical and Translational Science at Mayo Graduate School while working as a supplemental PT in inpatient rehabilitation. Her thesis focused on shoulder kinematics and spinal posture in individuals with spinal cord injury during wheelchair propulsion. She is currently a postdoctoral research fellow in the Rehabilitation Medicine Research Center, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Mayo Clinic. In this role she is primarily involved in two lines of research: upper extremity biomechanics in manual wheelchair users and fluoroscopy-based kinematic evaluation following total knee arthroplasty. She is engaged in teaching anatomy within various educational programs in the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and is an adjunct faculty member for the College of St. Scholastica’s transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy Program. Peter Rundquist, PT, PhD Peter J. Rundquist, PT, PhD is the Director of the DPT program. He graduated from the University of Minnesota’s PT program in 1989. He spent 7 years practicing as a physicians’ extender in the US Army. He earned his PhD in Rehabilitation Science from the U of M in 2003. Most recently, he has been the Chair of the Institutional Review Board and a member of the Krannert School of Physical Therapy’s faculty at the University of Indianapolis. Dr. Rundquist has extensive orthopedic physical therapy practice with a specialization in evaluation and treatment of patients with spine dysfunction. He has taught musculoskeletal evaluation and treatment and supervised student research in the KSPT DPT program. In addition, he has taught clinical research methods, lumbar spine evaluation and treatment, pathophysiology, and professional writing and advised DHS research projects in the College of Health Science’s postprofesional program..

The role of positioning and assistive technology in maintaining health and quality of life; and reducing lifetime healthcare costs will be presented with supporting research. Course Objectives Identify three physiological side effects of immobility common in neurological patient populations. List three benefits of positioning children throughout their childhood supported by evidence. Identify parameters for positioning that are supported by evidence based medicine. List three benefits of standing in mitigating the impacts of immobility supported by research. Speaker Biography Mary has nearly 30 years of experience as a PT. She received her BA in Physical therapy in 1986, and doctorate in PT in 2008 from the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth , MN. In 1991, Mary received her 8 week certification in NDT. Mary has worked in a variety of settings including Courage Center Rehabilitation center, private practice, and school settings birth to 21. Mary has a particular interest in early intervention, currently working with children and their families in birth to three in White Bear Lake schools in Minnesota. Mary has published articles in Advance for Physical Therapy Rehab Medicine, an abstract in Pediatric Physical Therapy, 2013; and is a contributor to the Easy Stand blog site with a variety of articles over the past 5 years. Mary has presented educational courses since 2014 for Altimate Medical. She has also volunteered in Nicaragua helping indigenous communities with wheelchairs and equipment for children with special needs.

While literature supports the benefits of early mobility, implementation for many facilities remains pervasive. This course will review barriers and solutions for improving early mobility for patients who are critically ill. Multiple quality improvement projects will be reviewed. Course Objectives Overview of evidence supporting early rehabilitation and mobility in the ICU. Explain the mindset change for our profession, where typically these patients were thought to be “too sick” to benefit. Explain how multidisciplinary collaboration improves with an embedded therapy model. Explain the principles of clinical-decision making for safe and effective early rehabilitation in the ICU. Review therapist productivity in the intensive care unit with utilization of a therapy technician. Describe barriers and solutions to increase staffing and resources.. Speaker Biography Patrick received a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science and Athletic Training from Iowa State University and his Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree from Des Moines University. He has been employed as a physical therapist in the PM&R Department since 2008, initially as a staff physical therapist (2008-2013) and currently as the acute hospitalist clinical lead. Patrick has participated in several quality improvement initiatives during his tenure at Mayo Clinic and participates as a member of several PM&R and Nursing department work groups. More recently he began serving as a member of the Critical Care IMP – Clinical Practice Subcommittee. Patrick has presented on the topic of early mobilization for critically ill patients in the ICU at several local and national meetings, including a platform presentation at combined sections 2016. As evidence of his expertise in acute care and critical care physical therapy practice, Patrick was recently recognized as a Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Certified Specialist (CCS) by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties. Additionally, in recognition of his efforts at improving the practice and providing excellent care, Patrick has earned a number of Mayo Clinic’s “Above & Beyond” awards and a recipient of the Karis Award in 2014.

You will learn to locate resources to help you better prepare and understand the appeals process. We will engage in review of real life case studies to learn why denials are made and what the outcomes were to appeals. We will also compose a strong appeal as a group based on a real life example. Finally, we will review the Alternative Payment System and come to understand how APTA and others are partnering with the federal government to combat fraud and abuse. Course Objectives Identify and learn about Medicare policy as it relates to the provision of physical therapy services Learn about the 5 levels of Medicare appeal Understand the current political and legislative environmental factors contributing to heightened Medicare auditing Learn what assertions the various Medicare contractors are making when determining that therapy services are considered medically unnecessary Learn how to compose a succinct and effective appeal letter for denied therapy services Identify the key components of the alternative payment system and how that will assist in combating fraud and abuse Speaker Biography Matthew Mesibov, PT, GCS has been a physical therapist since 1984. Prior to moving to Minnesota in 2013, he was Director of Regulatory Affairs for Fox Rehabilitation, a large private practice on the east coast. Matthew is employed at the Minnesota based organization, Centrex Rehab, a post acute care provider of physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech language pathology services. He is the Clinical Physical Therapist Specialist at Centrex Rehab where in addition to clinical responsibilities; he actively reviews clinical documentation and composes appeals when payer denials occur. Matthew Mesibov has been an active member of APTA on a chapter, section and national level for several years including among other positions, Federal Affairs Liaison and treasurer for APTA New Jersey, Chair of the Health Policy Administration section's Payment and Practice committee, contributed to the APTA Defensible Documentation resource for the post acute care setting as part of the Section (now Academy) of Geriatrics, served on the APTA task force for the Alternative Payment System, and is a current member of the APTA Payment Practice and Advocacy Committee.

Yes. However, when you consider the spine as a kinematic chain, the roles of the thoracic spine and sacroiliac joint cannot be discounted. Join us to discuss concepts of regional interdependence in spinal treatment, as well as examination, manual therapy, and therapeutic exercise concepts for the thoracic spine and SIJ. This session will include both lecture and a skills lab. Course Objectives Define the concept of regional interdependence as it applies to spinal pathology and treatment Describe the treatment of thoracic spine as it relates to cervical, shoulder, and lumbar dysfunctions Demonstrate manual therapy techniques for the thoracic spine and the SIJ Describe application and progression of exercises for the thoracic spine Review the physical therapy examination of the SIJ Apply “sling stabilization” concepts to the SIJ Speaker Biographies Hugo is a physical therapist at the Institute for Athletic Medicine in Edina, MN. He completed Fairview's Orthopedic Physical Therapy Residency in 2015 and prior to that attended St. Kate's and the University of Minnesota. He has a special interest in shoulder rehabilitation and working with overhead athletes, as well as knee rehabilitation and alpine skiers. He lives with his wife in St. Paul. Shannon Kelly, PT, DPT from St. Catherine University in 2014. She completed the Fairview Orthopedic Residency 2015 and now works with Fairview at the University Orthopedic Therapy Center in Minneapolis. Acute Mobilization Strategies following Neurologic Injury		4/23/2016	4/23/2016	1:30 PM	3:00 PM	4/23/2016 1:30 PM - 3:00 PM Acute Mobilization Strategies following Neurologic Injury Speaker: Daniel Ellis Stam, PT, DPT, CBIS, ATC Contact Hours: 1.5 Course Description Diffuse axonal injury is one of the most prominent causes of disablement and morbidity post-traumatic brain injury. In the acute rehabilitation setting, a clinician with a basic understanding of modern neurological imaging techniques may be able to correlate what is being seen clinically, to a neuroanatomical model of the brain and the affected regions involved in motor learning. Utilization of such information may yield innovative new approaches to physical and cognitive rehabilitation based upon a dynamic and modern neuro-scientific model of brain response following traumatic injury. Additionally, recent evidence is expanding correlating physical and cardiovascular exercise to neuro-cognition parameters. Specifically, a biochemical model of the brain may be constructed linking graded intensity of aerobic activity to facilitation of neuro-plastic change. This course will build upon a scientific model of neurological injury response, identification of prognostic factors, and technology adjuncts in the acute setting to allow for more aggressive and early mobilization in the acute setting culminating in return of functional ambulation. Course Objectives Demonstrate a knowledge in current models of diffuse axonal injury following head trauma, and management of acute neurological disorders such as paroxysmal autonomic instability with dystonia Identify numerous prognostic indicators in the acute neurologic setting and how these factors may influence clinical innovation in physical therapy practice Identify future needs for clinical research and consideration of the type/specificity of acute intervention provided as well as the cardiovascular intensity provided given a biochemical model of the brain Speaker Biography Daniel Stam, PT, DPT, CBIS, ATC earned his Doctorate in Physical Therapy at Andrews University in southwest Michigan. He is Certified Brain Injury Specialist, and practices primarily in the inpatient neurological and acute care settings.

Course Objectives Give a summary of the epidemiology and potential risk factors of knee and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury risk. Detail the theories relating to the gender gap in athletic knee injuries, including anatomic, hormonal, and neuromuscular gender differences. Design and develop screening protocols to identify high‐risk athletes that demonstrate neuromuscular control deficits. Develop and implement neuromuscular training interventions for decreasing ACL injury risk. Design rehabilitation protocols to specifically address neuromuscular deficits in the ACLR athlete. Speaker Biographies Dr. Tim Hewett, PhD is the Director of the Biomechanics Lab and Sports Medicine Research for Mayo Clinic. Dr. Hewett possesses a doctorate in Physiology and Biophysics and a postdoctoral fellowships in Molecular Biology, Pharmacology and Cell Biophysics and Human Biomechanics. Over two hundred and fifty of his research articles have appeared in peer-reviewed medical journals and he has received numerous awards for his research. Corey Kunzer, PT, SCS, ATC, CSCS is the Supervisor for Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine in Rochester and Minneapolis and the Coordinator of the Mayo Clinic Sports Physical Therapy Residency Program. He received his degree in Physical Therapy from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.

In her 34+ years at Mayo, her clinical work has been predominantly in the acute care setting at Saint Mary's Hospital in general PT practice and wound management. She teaches as an Assistant Professor in the doctoral Program of Physical Therapy in the Mayo School of Health Sciences including topics of integumentary conditions and healing interventions. Heather has provided wound care education to students, therapy staff, residents, and other allied health staff at regional, state, and national levels. Her research efforts have been in the area of pressure ulcer prevention and treatment.

Rasa is a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND), the Minnesota Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (MAND), the Sports, Cardiovascular, and Wellness Nutrition dietetic practice group (SCAN), Collegiate and Professional Sports Dietitians Association (CPSDA), and served on the board of Twin Cities District Dietetic Association (TCDDA). Rasa’s passion is helping clients reach and improve their well-being through sustainable lifestyle changes, sound nutrition, mindfulness, and body movement. She is proficient in working with varying athletic abilities, ranging from high school students to Paralympic Gold Medalists, and has experience in many different areas of nutrition including sport nutrition, clinical nutrition, and eating disorders. As a nutrition professional and competitive athlete who personally struggled with nutrition in the middle of her competitive athletics, Rasa has learned firsthand how crucial proper nutrition can be for health and achieving performance goals. Rasa represented Lithuania in the World and European track and field championships, as well as the 2008 Beijing Olympics. She also holds national records in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the indoor mile in her home country.

It is crucial to understand the physical deficits that these tumors and treatment bring and intervene in order to optimize their quality of life during and after treatment. In this course, we will describe the disease process, epidemiology, and typical treatment regimen for children and adolescents with CNS tumors. We will discuss common impairments and activity limitations associated with pediatric brain tumors through current literature and clinical presentation as well as appropriate assessment tools used to describe the function of a child with a brain tumor and interventions. Course Objectives Identify common impairments and activity limitations associated with pediatric brain tumors. Describe a multidisciplinary approach to acute rehabilitation post diagnosis for brain tumor Identify assessment measurements appropriate for children with a pediatric brain tumor. Describe intervention strategies to target impairments and limitations including physical activity level. Speaker Biographies Lynn Tanner, PT is a physical therapist in the Cancer and Blood Disorders Clinic at Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota. She received her BA in Child Psychology from the University of Minnesota in 1999 and her Master’s in Physical Therapy from the Mayo School of Health Related Sciences in 2001. In her current role, she provides mainly consultative PT services to the oncology population in the oncology clinic, conducts research investigating peripheral neuropathy and the impact of PT in pediatric oncology, and serves as a resource for pediatric oncology rehabilitation. She has presented around the country at the APTA Combined Section Meetings, American Pediatric Hematology Oncology Nursing Association Conferences, Children’s Oncology Group meetings and at local Universities. She was awarded the Emerging Leader Award for 2010 from the APTA and served as the chair of the Pediatric Oncology SIG from 2010 to 2014. Jessie Ovans, PT, DPT is a physical therapist at Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota devoting half of her time in the Cancer and Blood Disorders Clinic. She received her BA in Psychology in 2003 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and her Doctorate in Physical Therapy from the University of Minnesota in 2006. She primarily sees patients on an outpatient basis in the oncology clinic and is involved in multiple studies conducted by the physical therapists in the oncology clinic. Currently she is the primary investigator in a study evaluating a PT coaching intervention to increase physical activity level in children with brain tumors.

The general public may feel that if children lose weight, they will be able to participate better. However, this population has true impairments. The children and their families may lack the knowledge of how to initiate appropriate and safe activities and exercise. This presentation will lay out an introduction on the pediatric weight management population and related co-morbidities. It will detail how a physical therapist fits into the multi-disciplinary team for the Pediatric Weight Management Clinic. Then, it will further detail a typical physical therapy evaluation complete with decision trees outlining which tests and measures to utilize as this population is quite diverse with ages 3-18. Lastly, It will provide a literature review on the impairments these patients may present with and research treatment protocols that have been, and are currently utilized. She has experience in a variety of treatment settings, including inpatient, outpatient and home health. Susan is also active in the outpatient specialty clinics at UMMCH: Adoption Medicine Clinic and Pediatric Weight Management Clinic. She helps in efforts to raise awareness about eating disorders and related issues in the community through the coordination of The Emily Program’s community education and outreach efforts. She has extensive public speaking experience and presents to schools, health care professionals, and anyone who wants to learn more about eating disorders. Most notably, Keri has presented 2 years in a row at the Minnesota Social Service Association Annual Conference, as a Keynote Speaker for St. Olaf’s Eating Disorder Awareness Week Program, and as a guest lecturer at the University of Minnesota. She also coordinates The Emily Program Foundation’s volunteer program. She has a bachelor’s in Sociology and a minor in Women’s Studies from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

Madanayake, PT, JD (Dipl.), GCS Contact Hours: 1.5 Course Description Cultural competence in physical therapy refers to the set of skills necessary to understand and respond effectively to the individual and cultural needs and values of each person we serve. The LGBTQ community experiences health disparities and barriers to care because of perceived or real phobias and discrimination by health care providers. Such discrimination on the part of physical therapists or physical therapist assistants, whether intentional or not, results in our being out of alignment with our professional tenets, including the APTA Code(s) of Ethics and APTA Core Values. This session will provide an opportunity for participants to individually and collectively reflect on their behaviors, attitudes, and workplace policies as they relate to serving the unique cultural needs of the LGBTQ community. We will consider the potential impact of various aspects of practice, including wording on intake forms, office artwork, language, bathroom signs, media in the waiting area, and staff behaviors. Participants will learn strategies, based on best practices, to promote a welcoming, inclusive, safe, high quality physical therapy experience for people of all sexual orientations. Course Objectives Define terms frequently used within the LGBTQ community. Examine the intersections between the ethical obligations laid out in the APTA Code(s) of Ethics, the elements of professionalism identified in the APTA Core Values, and APTA’s initiatives toward developing cultural competence. Explain currently acknowledged best practices for achieving a neutral and inclusive health care environment for patients/clients, students, and clinicians.
